In Italie the exposure to the Italian artistic and literary masterpieces had a profound effect on Liszt. Liszt played a central role in the history of 19th century music as performer, conductor, composer and innovator. Liszt transformed the way we listen to music: he was the inventor of the solo piano recital positioning the piano, with lid open, parallel to the audience; pioneer of the master class and themed music festival; originator of the symphonic poem and restless experimenter. Années de pèlerinage is widely considered as the masterwork and summation of Liszt's musical style. Much of it derives from his earlier work, Album d'un voyageur, his first major published piano cycle. Enrico Pace was born in Rimini, Italy. He studied piano with Franco Scala both at the Rossini Conservatory, Pesaro, where he graduated in conducting and composition and later at the Accademia Pianistica Incontri col Maestro, Imola. Winning the Utrecht International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in 1989 marked the beginning of his international career. Born in 1605, he avoided becoming a cooper, unlike the rest of his family, cultivating his musical talent first as a singer, then organist, and eventually chapel master. He enjoyed a succession of positions at various religious institutions in his native Italy, including the church of the Jesuit Collegium Germanicum in Rome – which, under his guidance, was transformed into an international centre for music. Indeed, Carissimi was a highly influential teacher whose fame reached far abroad, thanks to a number of his pupils (Krieger and Charpentier, among others). Now regarded as the grandfather of modern European music, he was essentially responsible for the forging of a new medium of ecclesiastical expression, that of the oratorio, and it is to his cultivation of this genre that this compilation is dedicated. Carissimi would take an historia, or biblical episode, from the Old Testament, and using a range of expressive procedures transform the narrative into the form of a spiritual play – a sacred epic in which recitative, ariosos, arias and choruses follow each other without interruption. From the dramatic use of silence and chromaticism to dissonant chords and embellishments underlining an important word, Carissimi utilised a rich palette of expression in order to heighten the drama of the plot. In their performances of works such as The Last Judgement and David and Jonathan, Ensemble Seicentonovecento – who aim to recreate the conditions and characteristics of 17th-century performance – breathe new life into this forgotten voice of the past. They are astutely led by Flavio Colusso, who also directs a number of the composer’s sacred motets. Tracklist in comments Thanks for watching! In this fascinating release we explore the middle period of the composer's career, a period in which Dallapiccola wrote the vast majority of his instrumental compositions and in which his harnessing of the serialist method for lyrical effect can also be observed (namely in the Quaderno musicale di Annalibera, dedicated to the composer's daughter on the occasion of her eighth birthday). What emerges from the variety of works on this recording – which effectively comprise his complete output for solo piano and violin and piano duo – is the composer's penchant for strict form and technique, from his regular use of canon (the Sonatina canonica's title betrays its structure) to his fascination for Italian Baroque counterpoint (the Tartiniana seconda is another example of this), but most of all his questing approach to composition, which tends towards the contemplative and philosophic. Maria Clementi and Luca Fanfoni draw on their Baroque and contemporary music performing experience to deliver masterful interpretations of these works. Both are acclaimed performers in their right who enjoy international careers; past recitals include Leipzig's Gewandhaus and Carnegie Hall in New York, and both artists have broadcast live on radio and television. This is their first recording for Brilliant Classics. Luigi Dallapiccola (1904-1975) was one of the most fascinating composers of 20th century Italy. Influenced in his youth by Wagner and Debussy he later “converted” to the 12-tone technique of the 2nd Viennese School. His works in this style feature strict forms (with hints of Neo Baroque counterpoint) and an expression of lyrical warmth and beauty (sometimes sorely missing in 12-tone compositions by other, more severe masters). This new recording presents his complete output for solo piano and for the combination of violin and piano. Excellent performances by two leading Italian soloists: violinist Luca Fanfoni and pianist Maria Clementi, a duo which already gave concerts in the Leipzig Gewandhaus and Carnegie Hall New York. Notes on the music and artist biographies. Tracklist in comments Thanks for watching! However, Shakespeare was not the only European writer to pass away in 1616 – in fact, his death on April 23rd of that year was preceded by just one day by that of his contemporary, the Spaniard Miguel de Cervantes. A novelist rather than a playwright, Cervantes is best known for the extraordinary work Don Quixote. This book, alongside many of his other works –including the Novelas ejemplares and La Galatea – form the backbone of Spanish literature. This release brings together a selection of songs for tenor by composers contemporary with Cervantes. The artists have chosen short extracts from works by Cervantes (printed alongside the sung texts in the CD booklet) to thematically link the songs together, drawing the listener into the musical world in which Cervantes lived and worked. Luz y Norte ('Light and Guide') are a young Spanish ensemble, comprising a tenor, viola da gamba, harp and percussion, although the instrumentation varies according to the repertoire. All the members of the group are experienced both as soloists and as members of other prestigious early music groups. They have performed at numerous festivals, united by their shared desire to spread knowledge of the vocal and instrumental repertoire of Renaissance and Baroque Spain. The chamber music of Anton Arensky (1861-1906) embodies a happy and inspired synthesis of two contrasting sound-worlds: the peculiarly Russian language of Rimsky-Korsakov and the ‘Mighty Handful’, and that of Western-European accents exemplified in the sphere of chamber music by Brahms, but filtered through Tchaikovsky’s West-leaning approach. It’s Mendelssohn who comes to mind in the vernal surge of energy that opens the First Piano Trio which is Arensky’s best-known work beyond his piano music. The sombre third-movement elegy is a tribute to the cellist Davidoff, and accordingly opens with a soulful cello melody, before an impassioned finale banishes all introspection. • What reading slowly taught me about writing | Jacqueline Woodson
    October 8, 2019

Visit http://TED.com to get our entire library of TED Talks, subtitles, translations, personalized Talk recommendations and more. Reading slowly -- with her finger running beneath the words, even when she was taught not to -- has led Jacqueline Woodson to a life of writing books to be savored. In a lyrical talk, she invites us to slow down and appreciate stories that take us places we never thought we'd go and introduce us to people we never thought we'd meet. "Isn't that what this is all about -- finding a way, at the end of the day, to not feel alone in this world, and a way to feel like we've changed it before we leave?" she asks. He even said to her: “you are a phenomenon, while I am but a talent”. Her piano works, uncompromising granite sculptures, feature sharp and extreme dynamic contrasts, cluster chords and use of the extreme registers of the keyboard, while their spiritual message is one of infinite despair and passionate protest (whether against the Soviet regime, or against human existence in general). Ivan Sokolov (b.1960), Russian pianist and composer, was one of Ustvolskaya’s favoured interpreters, and his playing bears a monumental and authorative stamp of uthenticity. The earliest trace of his work as a composer is from 1718, when he was working at the basilica of Assisi, becoming first organist there and later maestro di capella until 1727. He subsequently worked in senior posts in the cities of Rome and Padua, and died in 1788. Zuccari was primarily a church composer, so the ten Cello Sonatas heard on this new recording are a more unusual part of his output and have only recently been confirmed as his works. The pieces are found in an anonymous 18th-century manuscript housed in the Sacro Conveno library in Assisi; after a day of research, MVSICA PERDVTA were able to attribute them to Zuccari. Anyone hearing the easy-going opening to the Sonata Concertata for violin and guitar would be forgiven for thinking they were listening to another composer entirely. But then he was so much more than the devilish virtuoso of impressive if one-dimensional posthumous reputation: not least, an avid guitarist, in which capacity he would often delight in playing among friends (one’s sympathies go to whichever poor musician was tasked with playing the violin on such occasions). All the works on this album of chamber music show the composer’s lighter side, except perhaps the fiendish complexity of the variations on a theme from Rossini’s Mosè in Egitto. There are three ritornelli for two violins and bass (here played on a cello) which take a Baroque form and rework it with Classical harmony into a trio of four- minute, upbeat miniatures. Six brief Preludes are like preliminary studies for the Caprices, less rhythmically and technically convoluted. The flying spiccato of the Moto perpetuo Op.11 opens a window onto Paganini the recitalist with a piece designed to leave an audience breathless with its string of semiquavers. The long-breathed melody of the Cantabile Op.17 Rossini and Schumann for Paganini is touched with the kind of grace that drew admiration and esteem from Rossini and Schumann for Paganini’s compositions as much as his playing. These artists are all familiar musicians on Brilliant Classics: the Noferini family have recorded chamber music by Martucci (BC94968) and Sgambati (BC94813; ‘nothing short of an unexpected revelation… razor sharp, focused, and exciting interpretations’, according to a reviewer for Arkiv Music), and Giulio Tampalini can be heard in the music of Tarrega (BC94336), Respighi (BC95230) and Llobet (BC94335), among others. This new recording features some rarely recorded chamber music by Niccolo Paganini, the violinist “possessed by the devil”, great innovator of his instrument and composer of delightful, brilliantly written music of great melodic invention. Included are the 3 Ritornelli for 2 violins and bass, the substantial Sonata Concertata for violin and guitar, the famous and notorious (because of its inhuman difficulties) Mosè variations, 6 Preludes for violin solo and the well known Cantabile ad Moto Perpetuo. Played with total dedication and “spielfreude” by three members of the Noferini family: Roberto, Andrea and Anna, together with the excellent Italian guitarist Giulio Tampalini. In the years in which Giovanni was active, the churches of Venice bore witness to the emancipation of instrumental music from vocal music. At St Mark’s, music for the organ appeared alongside liturgical choral music, independent from the latter and comprising motets and instrumental pieces. Indeed, in Gabrieli’s Venice a distinction was being made between virtuoso organ soloists and choral accompanists. His works for keyboard, whilst relatively scarce in his catalogue, embrace all of the main genres in fashion between the late 16th and early 18th centuries. This recording presents the entire body of work, and was put together predominantly on the basis of the manuscripts held by the Foà and Giordano collections in Turin. Following the removal of numerous works and the discovery of new manuscripts, the recent Charteris (C.) catalogue comprises four toccate, 16 ricercari and six canzoni da sonar. These are joined by the 11 Intonationi d’organo designed originally as introductions to vocal works or other instrumental compositions. Performing these works is noted musician Roberto Loreggian, who released the 6-CD set of the Complete Keyboard Music of Giovanni Gabrieli’s uncle, Andrea, on Brilliant Classics in 2015 to great critical acclaim (BC94432). He has collaborated on several other recordings for Brilliant Classics including the C.P.E. Bach Edition (BC94960) alongside Federico Guglielmo, praised by Gramophone for its ‘fine style and spirit’, and the Frescobaldi Complete Edition (BC94111), which earned him the 2009 ‘National Classical Music Track Award’. To faithfully recreate the early-17th-century sounds Gabrieli himself would have heard, Roberto Loreggian returns to the historic 1532 Vincenzo Colombi organ at the Valvasone cathedral in northeast Italy, the same instrument he used for his Andrea Gabrieli set and the only 16th-century Venetian organ still in existence. The harpsichord on the recording also dates from the 17th century. Giovanni Gabrieli (1554/56-1612) was born in Venice into a musical family, his famous uncle Andrea was organist of the San Marco. After serving Duke Albrecht V in Munich Giovanni Gabrieli returned to Venice, where he eventually succeeded his uncle as organist of the San Marco. Gabrieli was one of the most influential composers of his time, the transition from renaissance to Baroque. In his vocal works he invented the polychoral singing, featuring multiple choirs and instrumental ensembles. This new recording contains his complete output for the keyboard, organ and harpsichord. His Canzones, Ricercares and Fantasias are highly innovative, virtuoso works in which in some of them he introduced for the first time dynamic markings. Roberto Loreggian is one of the foremost keyboardists of Italy. In this recording he plays on a historic organ in Valvasone, built around 1533 by Vincenzo Colombi, the specifications of which are included in the booklet, which also contains an essay on Gabrieli by a noted musicologist. These world premiere recordings of works written (or recomposed and arranged) between 2016 and 2018 are thus a significant contribution to the Kancheli discography. They find the composer at his most charming and epigrammatic in a series of 25 musical ‘letters’ for violin and string orchestra. Most of them are under three minutes in length, taking their material from themes written by the Georgian composer for the film scores which he has composed throughout his career. Compared to his more celebrated concert works such as the symphonies and cantatas of often starkly imposing and monumental expression, these letters strike a more whimsical, often wistful tone. The subjects – to whom they are addressed – are mostly actors and directors who have worked on the films scored by Kancheli. But there are also pieces written with palpable affection to performers such as the composer Jansug Kakhidze, who have championed his music over the years, to fellow composers such as Bidzina Kvernadze, and to artistic friends such as the writer, puppeteer and painter Revaz Gabriadze. The project was initiated by the violinist Andrea Cortesi, who had asked for a piece for violin and string orchestra. Kancheli returned to a cycle of 18 miniatures he had written for violin and piano with Cortesi in mind, and then further back to a collection of 33 piano-only miniatures. Kancheli explains this in a booklet introduction, complemented by a fuller essay from Cortesi, making this album an authoritative recording of Kancheli at his most appealing – perhaps the ideal introduction to his unique voice. Giya Kancheli is a Georgian composer whose intensely personal style is closely related to Minimalism and New Spiritualism. Kancheli’s “Letters to Friends” is an anthology of themes from his film music, rewritten and collected in a cycle for violin and string orchestra, especially made for violinist Andrea Cortesi. Each piece/letter carries the name of a different Georgian friend of the composer, the cycle is a tribute to friendship, sharing creativity and connecting life and art. The performers are the Georgian strings and violinist Andrea Cortesi. Kancheli himself is very happy with this project: “My sincere gratitude goes out to the musicians and the sound team for taking such good care of my music and for the brilliant sound”. The previous Kancheli recording of Andrea Cortesi, “Miniatures for Violin and Piano“ was issued on Brilliant Classics BC95267, and received great critical acclaim in the international press. Handel appears eventually to have entered into cooperation with the London publisher John Walsh once the Royal Privilege he had secured for the printing of his own works had expired. Thus a radically revised edition of the suites appeared in 1733-4, and it is this that Scipione Sangiovanni has recorded. Like the Grand Suites, the second volume contains both original and arranged music for keyboard composed throughout Handel’s career, though heavily weighted towards his youth: virtually all the contents predate 1706 (the exceptions being HWV 434 from before 1717/8 and HWV436 from between 1721 and 1726). Having received no further attention from the mature composer, they retain a sense of the confident if sometimes undisciplined exuberance of his youth. They include the grand, standalone G major Chaconne HWV 435 as well as a still more expansive example of the form, HWV 442. Bach frequently borrowed from himself and paid tribute to other composers by transcribing their works for other instruments, For example his oeuvre for organ includes transcriptions of some instrumental concertos based on work of composers like Vivaldi. These release contains transcriptions of both Bach’s own concertos for solo keyboard and of instrumental concertos by Vivaldi. These works are certainly enhanced by the sonorities of the organ. Played by the Russian organist Elena Barshai on the Silbermann organ of Arlesheim Cathedral and the Metzler organ of the Church of St. Clara, Basle (both in Switzerland). Also included is an arrangement for two organs – both played by Barshai - of Bach’s Concerto for four harpsichords (which again is based on a concerto for four violins by Vivaldi).
