In Il rè pastore, a relatively early opera from the then nineteen-year-old composer, we see the beginnings of genius in a man who was later to become a true master of the genre. Il rè pastore was commissioned in 1775 for the visit of Austria’s Archduke Maximilian Franz to Salzburg. Written in just six weeks, the opera is based on a libretto by Pietro Metastasio in which Alexander the Great (Alessandro) discovers that young shepherd Aminta is the rightful heir to the throne, taking it upon himself to restore the boy to power. Regardless of the composer’s youth, several moments in the opera show hints of the more mature Mozart, including the aria ‘L’amerò sarò costante’ in which rippling strings and lush orchestration are combined with a poignant, yearning vocal line. Another highlight is the glorious ensemble finale of Act II, a feature that would become a vital characteristic of Mozart’s later operas. Musica ad Rhenum has earned a special place in the early music world, with critics describing the ensemble’s performances as ‘cutting-edge’ and ‘exhilarating’. The group are joined by a fantastic set of vocal soloists, with Johanette Zomer assuming the role of Aminta and Alexei Gregoriev playing Alexander the Great. His work for harpsichord alone is much less well-known, though hardly less stylish. Like his contemporaries Jacques Duphly and Jean-Phillippe Rameau, Barrière entitled one of his pieces La Boucon for Anne-Jeanne Boucon, who later married Jean-Joseph de Mondonville: she must have been a woman of enviable poise and dignified beauty to judge from the music written in her honour. The first five of his six sonatas on this album are not French dance suites but transcriptions of Italian-inspired sonatas which he had originally composed for the smallest and highest instrument of the old family of viols, the pardessus de viole. The Italian influence can be traced in the bold and often unprepared dissonances which lend the sonatas both charm and unpredictable drama; the elaborate ornamentation, too, derives at least as much from the florid violin writing of Corelli and Geminiani as from the French harpsichord tradition. Bernard de Bury is a figure whose music was lost to history until very recently, when in 2009 the scholar-musician Ruta Bloomfield transcribed these pieces from obscure manuscripts and gave them their first performances in modern times. De Bury (1720-1785) was born into a musical family in Versailles, and there he stayed to serve the court. There are four suites, which in the style of Rameau and Couperin describe with wit and tender affection characters from ancient mythology and the composer’s own time, with melodies almost buried beneath cascades of exquisite decoration. In his dedication, de Bury states that he was fifteen years old when he wrote the suites, though such precocious youth could not be guessed from the music itself, which is far from immature. This coupling is unique on record; only one previous recording of de Bury’s work is presently available. Tracklist in comments Thanks for watching! Any new recording of Charles-Valentin Alkan is an event, which hopes to widen the public appreciation of this still unknown genius of the French Romantic period. After his unsuccessful efforts at a brilliant concert career, Alkan went into reclusion, concentrating on teaching and composing his totally unique oeuvre mainly written for piano solo. One of the greatest virtuosos of his time (even Franz Liszt was nervous to play in his presence) he wrote piano music of the most colossal proportions, scope and difficulty. This new recording by the young and extraordinarily gifted young Italian Vincenzo Maltempo brings together two of Alkan masterworks: the Grande Sonata “Les Quatre Ages” (in which Alkan musically describes the several stages of Man’s Life, from exuberant youth to tragic old age), and the Symphonie pour piano solo, a dramatic four movement work in Classical/Romantic style. As an encore the fiendishly difficult Etude for two hands unisono, a pianistic tour de force. This unusual cultural background accounts for why the Italian’s music, though contemporary with that of Bach and Handel, differs so much in comparison–Spanish dance rhythms (such as the flamenco), and folk tunes with Moorish and gypsy-like flavours, indicate that day-by-day-street life was a great source of inspiration to Scarlatti. Written in single-movement form, the 555 works comprising the collection also reveal Scarlatti’s development of new playing techniques, including note repetitions and fast passages in parallel 3rds and 6ths, not to mention his important pioneering of structures – which in turn point to the impending emergence of the Classical style. They are performed with gusto by Pieter-Jan Belder, whose assured interpretation does full justice to this important body of late Baroque music. Harpsichordist Pieter-Jan Belder needed seven years to record all of Scarlatti’s 555 sonatas for keyboard, but of course he succeded in this admireable task and the results are truly magnificent. This release is the fourth volume, containing the sonatas Nos. 318 - 371. Tracklist in comments Thanks for watching! Written between 2000 and 2004, and entitled according to the terminology of the Renaissance scientist Paracelsus (Mercury: Water; Salt: Earth; Sulphur: Air; The imponderable: Fire), Roberto Fabbriciani’s Alchemies offers an evocative take on these universal components, focusing intently on timbre and its possibilities in both acoustic and electronic environments in order to achieve a continuously shifting palette of sound. Fabbriciani uses different models of the flute, each combined with tape, to create his soundscape – in Mercury, for example, the deep sound of the hyperbass flute suggests marine depths and submerged universes with a plethora of mysterious creatures, in harmony with the ancient concept of water as an element capable of mixing with all things due to its essential fluidity. The release – Fabbriciani’s first for Brilliant Classics – is a pioneering experiment in technique meets ancient concept; as one of today’s leading flautists, Fabbriciani has honed his skills through collaborating with many major composers of the past 50 years – Luciano Berio, Elliott Carter and Brian Ferneyhough, among others. “Whatever he [Fabbriciani] plays is always in the best way.” John Cage (1989) Other information: - Recorded in 2011, Studio Neri, Montevarchi, Arezzo, Italy. - A new recording by composer and performer Roberto Fabbriziani, one of the foremost and famous ‘flute artists’ in the world, having collaborated with Elliot Carter, Luciano Berio, Brian Ferneyhough and John Cage, icons of the 20th century avant-garde. - Fabrizziani combines acoustic with electronical music, playing several flutes of different sizes, from coloratura to hyperbass. - An alchemy of unheard-of sounds, timbres and textures: truly fascinating for the open mind and open ear! - Contains English and Italian notes on the music and its composer. During the winter of 2018-2019, one million tons of salt were applied to icy roads in the state of Pennsylvania alone. The salt from industrial uses like this often ends up in freshwater rivers, making their water undrinkable and contributing to a growing global crisis. How can we better protect these precious natural resources? Physical organic chemist Tina Arrowood shares a three-step plan to keep salt out of rivers -- and create a circular salt economy that turns industrial byproducts into valuable resources. Here, rather refreshingly, it is joined by a host of other orchestral works written for the instrument: the quiet Sérénade mélancolique, created for the esteemed Hungarian violinist Leopold Auer and composed soon after the Piano Concerto No.1 in B minor; the Valse-scherzo, a charming divertissement with a gypsy flavour and strong rhythmic pulse – not to be confused with the much more famous version for solo piano; and finally Souvenir d’un lieu cher, whose middle movement was originally intended as the slow movement of the Concerto and which was later re-orchestrated by Glazunov out of the lesser known version for violin and piano. Interpreting these works is internationally renowned Ilya Grubert, winner of the Tchaikovsky Competition back in 1978 and described as ‘a musician of exceptional talent, a violinist in the tradition of the great Russian virtuosos, possessed of a clear unwavering tone and an extraordinary technique.’ (New York Times). He is supported by an all-Russian cast: the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Vassily Sinaisky – now Conductor in Residence at the Bolshoi Theatre. This CD contains the 2nd and 3rd Piano Concerto. The 2nd piano concerto is for the left hand, written for pianist Paul Wittgenstein who lost his right arm in WWI. It was Wittgenstein’s favourite concerto of the many works he commissioned (a.o. by Ravel). The 3rd Piano Concerto, written in 1926, is headed “Per aspera ad astra” (through hardship to the stars), which is presented in the gradual unfolding from a dark C minor to a high and luminous C major at the end of the work, including organ and bells, the affirmation of light conquering darkness. Excellent performances by pianist Stefan Doniga and the Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by David Porcelijn. “Stefan Doniga drives the music onward fearlessly and make the best possible case for both works”. Theoretical physicist David Deutsch delivers a mind-bending meditation on the "great monotony" -- the idea that nothing novel has appeared in the universe for billions of years -- and shows how humanity's capacity to create explanatory knowledge could be the thing that bucks this trend. "Humans are not playthings of cosmic forces," he says. "We are users of cosmic forces." His musical promise was quickly recognised, and he went to study with Giuseppe Martucci in Bologna as a teenager, before a period in Berlin, where he was taught and encouraged by no less than Ferruccio Busoni. Even if an international career did not beckon for him as it did for other pupils of Busoni such as Weill and Varese, Fano’s return to his home country saw him forge a steady career as a pianist, conductor, writer, promoter, and instructor of young musicians in many of the more rigorous conservatoires including Bologna, Naples and Milan, where he retired as professor of piano in 1947. He died in 1961, a man whom time and fashion had overtaken. The works on this album date from over 60 years earlier, and they overflow withintense Lisztian expression. The four fantasies of 1896 begin with a dreamy rhapsody, marked Adagio con intimo sentimento. A lovely song without words in the Mendelssohn style is followed by a richly chromatic intermezzo, well worthy of his teacher Busoni and infused with fin-de-siècle nostalgia. There is a final, impetuously driven Capriccio to conclude the set. Dating from three years later, the Sonata is more ambitious in form and harmony, containing much dense polyphony which again calls to mind Busoni’s example; so do the myriad effects of timbre and colour which are remarkably advanced for a composer still in his 20s. Pietro De Maria is rapidly making a name for himself in his native Italy, with a repertoire ranging from J.S. Bach to Ligeti and including the complete works of Chopin in concert. Recent recordings include not only this Brilliant Classics recording but the second book of Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier, and Beethoven’s cello sonatas with Enrico. Guido Alberto Fano was born in Padua in 1875. After his studies with Martucci he went to Germany and Austria to develop as a pianist and composer, and received support from Richard Strauss, who thought highly of him. During his long lifetime (he died in 1961) he held important posts at the conservatories of Naples and Milan, active as a promotor of Italian instrumental music. Fano’s substantial E major Piano Sonata (over 35 minutes) is written in late romantic style, rich and dense, highly polyphonic and chromatic and of the highest technical level (Busoni loved the work). It is one of the most important Italian piano sonatas, on a par with the Martucci sonata. The four Fantasies are lighter in mood, a warm Mediterranean pendant of Schumann and Brahms. Superb performance by one of Italy’s foremost pianists, Pietro de Maria, who recorded for Decca the complete piano works of Chopin. Tracklist in comments Thanks for watching! Baroque is marked by an extravagant style of music, painting and architecture. The word Baroque comes from the French, hence the title. The grandeur of the Baroque was encouraged by the Catholic Churce in contrast of the simplicity of the Protestant Churce. The style started in Italy in the 17th century and spread across Europe. In music Baroque meant a period of experimentation and innovation, resulting in new forms of music like concerto and sinfonia. Early-Baroque concerto consisted of voices and instruments in which the instruments had differtent parts as opposed tot he initial form in which the instruments accompanied voices. In the late Baroque concerto evolved to its modern shape where in the concertino (a small group of instruments) was often reduced to a single instrument playing with (or against) an orchestra. The main composers of the Late Baroque concerto were Bach, Telemann, Vivaldi, Albinoni and Handel among others. A sinfonia is a short piece of music with a means to calm and silence people in advance of the main piece of music. One of the greatest inventions of the Baroque era was the invention of the piano by Cristofori, an employee of none other than Ferdinando de’Medici. On this compilation you will find the best the Baroque era has to offer: Concertos of Johann Sebastian Bach, Georg Frideric Handel, Georg Philipp Telemann, Antonio Vivaldi, Tomaso Giovanni Albinoni, Carlo Ambrogio Lonati, Alessandro Scarlatti, Unico Wilhelm van Wassenaer, Johann Melchior Molter, Charles Dieupart, Francesco Antonio Bonporti and Nicola Porpora!
