Opening the collection is Debussy’s technically demanding Sonata in D minor, a staple of the cello repertoire. The whimsical motives, repetitive tones and scales of this work give way to the ingenious combination of atonality and Romantic lyricism of Schnittke’s Sonata No.1, which is followed by Beethoven’s visionary Sonata No.5 in D, a homage to J.S. Bach. This is in turn succeeded by Van Breen’s Flavours, written in 2011. A playful piece that combines many styles, it is written with the five base flavours in mind. Amber Docters van Leeuwen took her tuition with Dmitri Ferschtman at the Royal Conservatory of the Hague in her native country. Then she moved to New York where she continued her studies at Stony Brook University and the Manhattan School of Music. A recipient of several major awards, including the National Cello Competition’s first prize in Amsterdam and the Samuel Mayes Memorial Cello Award, Amber is famed for her varied concert programmes in which she combines music from all eras, contrasting established classics of the cello repertoire with contemporary works. Joining her on the disc is her long-standing musical partner Taisiya Pushkar, a dynamic pianist and former winner of the Oberlin Concerto Competition. Most of the pieces from this collection come from the start of the Austrian composer’s career, written while he was still in his teens. Despite this, they still show a remarkable level of maturity and experimentation, with each piece markedly different from the next. One of four quartets from 1813 (the year Schubert was just turning 16), the String Quartet in C D46 stands out for its technique, development and dramatic pacing, as well as Schubert’s unconventional use of C major as a key of depth and seriousness rather than jollity and warmth. The String Quartet in G minor D173, from 1815, was written in just eight days, and is a nod back to Haydn and Mozart. Schubert subverts the traditional sonata form, however, by unexpectedly making use of the relative B flat major, creating a dual tonality that lasts the whole of the first movement. The latest piece in this collection is the String Quartet in C minor D703 (fragment), otherwise known as the Quartettsatz. Despite only being one movement of a never‐completed quartet, it reveals one of the earliest examples of the composer’s ‘mature’ style, with an expressive tonality that only comes to rest in the home key in the last few bars of the movement. The quartet have achieved highly positive reviews for their previous Schubert volumes, with ArkivMusic giving an ‘enthusiastic nod of approval’, the reviewer saying ‘I cannot recommend this release [Volume 2] too highly.’ Their release of music for string quartet by Engelbert Humperdinck was praised by Musicweb International, who wrote ‘I couldn’t fault the beautiful playing of the Diogenes Quartet’ and praised their ‘glorious string tone and impeccable ensemble.’ This up-and-coming group is certainly one to watch out for. This new instalment of Schubert’s Complete String Quartets by the German Diogenes Quartet contains his early quartets, from the youthful Overture D8a to the C minor Quartettsatz. Comparing the early works with Schubert’s “late” and mature quartets may find the earlier compositions lacking in profundity, but judged by themselves they are delightful works, in the spirit of Haydn, tinged here and there with Schubert’s melancholy and deep romantic feelings of love and death. The Schubert cycle by the German Quartet Diogenes Quartet is highly regarded, critics praise their superb unity of ensemble and style, their impeccable intonation and their fiery and passionate music making. Excellent liner notes written by a scholar, in both English and German. Thanks for watching! Naruhiko Kawaguchi was winner of the Rome Fortepiano International Competition 2013. This is his first complete album, and it showcases an artist of no mean technique and imagination, whose work in historically informed performance values has produced performances of great elan and sensitivity. Dussek’s Op.35 sonatas bear a significant dedication to Muzio Clementi, who had done so much before him to explore and extend keyboard technique on the early experimental examples of work in the evolution of instruments from harpsichord to piano. Dussek himself followed Clementi’s example in producing a teaching method for the instrument, co-authored with Ignaz Pleyel, of which Kawaguchi plays some examples which have scarcely been heard on record. Yet they are no mere dry studies but settings of songs from different countries, testing both technical and expressive skill and running the gamut of the fortepiano’s expressive range, which Dussek had explored in partnership with the maker John Broadwood. The sonatas are naturally more complex and developed works, which characteristically modulate between keys and moods with quicksilver unpredictability and elegance, reminiscent of the work of C.P.E. Bach and full of ornate decoration yet also hinting at an almost-orchestral weight of timbre which has led some commentators to see these sonatas as prefiguring the revolutionary work of Beethoven. Czech composer Jan Ladislaw Dussek (1760-1812) was a pupil of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and became one of the first piano virtuosos, traveling and concertising in many European countries. During his 10-year stay in London he developed with the manufacturer Broadwood the first 6-foot piano, extending its technical possibilities to a great extent. Dussek’s piano works, rooted in CPE Bach’s Sturm und Drang style, look forward to the Romantic era, in its use of Affetti, dramatic contrasts and gestures and an unheard-of virtuosity. This new recording presents the 3 Piano Sonatas Op. 35, dedicated to Muzio Clementi, and offering already glimpses of the young Beethoven (Pathetique!). Excellent performance played on a pianoforte by Naruhiko Kawaguchi, winner of the Rome Fortepiano International Competition. Tracklist in comments Thanks for watching! In WWII he served at the Western front in a folk ensemble, and experienced the horrors of war, the bodily and mental terror of violence and suppression. The Diary of Anne Frank, the memoir that has touched the heart of millions, was given an extra dimension through the medium of music, by composer Grigory Frid. Composed in 1968, the monodrama comprises a series of scenes from throughout the young girl’s time in hiding, including her joy at receiving a birthday present, her developing feelings for fellow hideaway Peter and moments in which she laments the lonliness of isolation. Thanks to its chamber music feel, The Diary of Anne Frank has become one of the most frequently performed operatic works in the world. Anne’s story is brought to life by soprano, Eva Ben Zvi, who won rave reviews for her interpretation of this demanding role. The performance is underpinned by the Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra and conductor Andrey Chistiakov. Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938), one of the greatest pianists in history, was fascinated by Chopin’s Etudes, and made his own enhanced transcriptions of them, to be divided in three types: a strict transcription for the left hand alone, free transcriptions, in which the text is either inverted, combined with another study or imitated through the medium of another study, and Cantus Firmus, where the left hand plays the melody and the right hand is freely treated in a contrapuntal way. Needless to say the technical and mental demands of these works are enormous, seemingly impossible to play. In the hands of a master however they become new and original, masterpieces in their own right. Young Italian pianist Emanuele Delucchi possesses the superhuman powers to conquer these works successfully, as he has proven with his previous Godowsky recording for Piano Classics. He plays on a 1906 Steinway D instrument, from the time of the composition of these works. Bach, and this disc shows a fine variety of accomplished voices. There is Bach’s second cousin, Johann Christoph, whom JS acknowledged as ‘a profound composer’ whose Wie bist du den, O Gott is a five-movement lament of arioso writing exploring the expressive regions of guilt and grief that would later be so characteristic of the younger man’s sacred language. Then there are other names now reasonably well-known to us – Tunder, Bruhns and Rosenmüller principal among them – who were active in North German cities as Kapellmeisters and composers. Interspersed with them are a trio sonata by Krieger and, to momentarily lift the mood, an instrumental Paduana by the now little-known Johann Schop, The disc concludes with one of the few extant works by the Hamburg-based musician Matthias Weckmann. The overall mood is solemn as one might expect from the composers’ use of the bass as a voice of authority and profundity, but elevated by their mastery of expressive dissonance to paint graphic equivalents in music of the emotions implied by the anonymous sacred texts. Each piece has the merit of brevity as well as direct emotional appeal to the listener. These forces have previously recorded a disc of cantatas by Agostino Steffani, the composer made famous by Cecilia Bartoli’s recordings. The bass soloist Mauro Borgioni specialises in early music, having worked with luminaries of the historically-informed performance scene such as Rinaldo Alessandrini and Claudio Cavina. In late 17th century Germany the Abendmusik (Evening music) was a social evening gathering of citizens in the church, accompanied first by an organ recital, later developing into more substantial sacred concerts, focusing on the genre of the Cantata for solo bass and ensemble, the severe and evocative timbre of the bass being a perfect expression of Lutheran doctrine. This new recording features Bass cantatas by Johann Christoph Bach, Tunder, Rosenmüller, Bruhns and Weckmann, with instrumental interludes of sonatas by Krieger and Schop. The impressive and sonorous bass of Mauro Borgioni is accompanied by the Accademia Hermans, an Italian Early Music group, led by Fabio Ciofini, featuring violin, viola da gamba, cello, theorbo and organ. Excellent liner notes are included in the booklet, as well as the full specifications of the historical Hermans organ of 1678. But the fact is that Wagner could also portray these elements on a much smaller scale and was adept at capturing the more intimate subtleties of the genre known as the Lied. This special collection brings together Wagner’s works for voice and piano. Among the works that appear in the collection are the Wesendonck-Lieder – a setting of five poems by Mathilde Wesendonck – two of which, ‘Träume’ and ‘Im Treibhaus’, Wagner describes as studies for Tristan and Isolde, one of his most celebrated operas. These five lieder combine a use of chromaticism, expression and restless, wave-like phrases that have come to be associated with much of the composer’s oeuvre. The disc also boasts an Italian version of the work, with text by Arrigo Boito. Also appearing in the collection are the famed ‘Gretchen am Spinnrade’ and ‘Melodram’ – the final two works of the Sieben Compositionen zu Goethes Faust – the complex ‘Dors, mon enfant’ and further works with texts by writers such as Victor Hugo, Georg Sheurlin and Pierre de Ronsard. Each of these works showcases Wagner’s immense talent at the portrayal of emotion through song. Praised by the New York Times as being ‘a fine dramatic soprano’, Michela Sburlati is a critically acclaimed singer who has performed in operas all over the world. Recent engagements include the role of Chrysothemis in Richard Strauss’s Elektra (Erl Festival, Austria) and the title role in Tosca at the Kazan Opera (Russia). She won the ‘Poggi’ Award as critics’ and audience’s choice in 2011, teaches lyric singing at the Conservatoire in Perugia and collaborates with the Lyric Opera Centre in Shanghai. Sburlati is accompanied by renowned pianist Marco Scolastra. Tracklist in comments Thanks for watching! On top of all this, his old patron the Prince of Gera-Ruess had died. This cultured nobleman had been a long time supporter of the composer, and admired his music. The prince had planned his funeral service in minute detail, and thus Schutz’s Musikalisches Exequien op.7 came into being. All the music in this 5CD set dates from this troubled period in the composer’s life. The second book of op.9 from 1639 shows some residue of happier times spent in Venice in 1609, and the music is skilfully written by Schutz for choirs with limited resources – the war had decimated towns and villages across Germany. Op.11 was dedicated to the authorities of the famous Thomaskirche where Schutz’s old friend Johann Hermann Schein had been cantor, and where, many years later, Johann Sebastian Bach would make his name. • El cant de la Sibilla: Sacred Music from medieval Catalunya

And what kind of music would have accompanied their journey? This release imagines Christmas Eve in medieval Catalonia, built around the 'song of the Sibyl'. The tradition of the singing Sibyl was not unique to Montserrat, but it was covertly practiced there long after it had been outlawed by the Council of Trent in 1575. The Sibyl was a pre-Christian woman who prophesied the coming of Christ; during the Middle Ages, a boy would dress up as the Sibyl and, blindfolded, sing the famous verses, normally in the third nocturn of the Christmas Day matins service. This recording uses the Catalan version of the Sibyl's song found in the archives of Barcelona Cathedral. Another Catalan book from the same period, the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, also informs much of this programme. It would have provided pilgrims with suitably religious music to sing on their approach to the cathedral, rather than secular songs and dances. The additional use of Gregorian chant sets the Cant de la Sibil·la in its original context of the early morning matins, before these were standardised into the Office of Readings. Finally, the addition of a traditional secular Catalan song – which tells the story of the doomed Count Arnau – marks the period in the night when the pious pilgrims, eagerly awaiting the opening of the monastery, would give the floor over to storytellers. This CD is the result of a unique project involving professional and amateur artists. The project was premiered as the first concert of a new annual festival in Florence run by Federico Bardazzi and Alessandra Montali, 'InCanto Armonico'. Established group Ensemble San Felice, who, under Bardazzi's direction, have previously made several successful CDs, were paired with the children's choir of the Cathedral of Sarzana, Pueri Cantores, who make up the 'voci bianche'. Featuring young soprano soloist Chiara Galioto, and performed on period instruments, this recording provides the listener with an enchanting aural portrayal of medieval Catalonia. This fascinating programme attempts to depict an imaginary coming together of pilgrims from various countries on their way to celebrate Christmas Mass at the Catalan monastery of Montserrat, one of the strongest bastions of Christianity in the middle ages. During the Matins on Christmas day a boy dressed up as the Sybil blindfoldedly sang the famous verses from pagan times predicting the coming of Christ and the end of the world (this practice was later forbidden by the Council of Trent). This liturgical drama includes music from the famous Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, Gregorian Chant and the 14th century Barcelona Lectionary. Federico Bardazzi and his vocal and instrumental group use copies of original instruments (based on detailed research). For the vocal parts they use a form of improvisation and ornamentation based on Christian, Arab and Jewish tradition, as was in the culture of the Iberian Peninsula in the middle ages. In Mussorgsky, Gavrylyuk unleashes his immense physical and creative powers to evoke the Russian scenes with which painter Hartmann inspired the composer: from the innocent children’s play, the mysterious old castle, the quarrelling market vendors to the grotesque gnomus, the netherworld of the Catacombae, the menacing evil of Baba Yaga to the monumental Great Gate of Kiev. In Schumann’s Kinderszenen Gavrylyuk draws with a fine pencil the scenes from a child’s world, tender, innocent, joyful, the disc suitably closing with the moving Der Dichter Spricht. Alexander Gavrylyuk has built an impressive international career, having played with New York Philharmonic and Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (3 seasons in a row). His first CD on Piano Classics (Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Scriabin, PCL0037) received rave reviews, including 5 star reviews in FonoForum, Gramophone and Fanfare.
