  • Moscheles: Complete Piano Sonatas
    January 19, 2021

Ignaz Moscheles (1794-1870) was born in Prague. In 1808 he settled in Vienna where he was a pupil of Albrechtsberger and Salieri - thanks to whose commendations he became adjunct Kapellmeister to the Court Theatre from 1811 to 1813. Beethoven was so impressed by him that he entrusted him with the piano transcription of Fidelio. The approval of the genius of Bonn and the establishment of a friendship between them that would continue over time were pivotal in those years to launching the young musician into the stream of the international concert world. Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer, Google Play): https://PianoClassics.lnk.to/MoschelesCompletePianoSonatasID More Information: https://www.piano-classics.com/articles/m/moscheles-complete-piano-sonatas/ Composer: Ignaz Moscheles Artist: Michele Bolla (fortepiano) This album contains the complete piano sonatas by Moscheles, presented by Piano Classics, a label of Brilliant Classics. Beethoven’s student, Mendelssohn’s teacher: new recordings of major works by a seminal figure of early musical Romanticism. By 1814, when the publisher Artaria commissioned him to prepare a piano reduction of Beethoven’s Fidelio, Ignaz Moscheles was one of Vienna’s most popular pianists, and his career as a virtuoso had begun. A decade later he settled in London, having put the finishing touches on the teenage Mendelssohn’s formal instruction in Berlin the previous year; the two remained friends until the younger man’s death in 1847. Moscheles’ composition has generally been viewed as a natural, not especially inspired adjunct to his considerable accomplishments as a performer and then teacher. However, Schumann considered Moscheles one of the best sonata composers of his generation, and this valuable new recording gives proofpositive of Schumann’s claim. They were all written within the relatively condensed span of around three years: the Op. 22 Sonata dates from 1814, while the single-movement ‘Sonate mélancolique’ Op. 49 in the pathos-laden key of F-Sharp Minor was written the same year but only published in 1821. Also composed in Vienna in 1814, the three movements of the Op. 27 Sonata caracteristique centre around a Viennese popular song, Freut euch des Lebens, later immortalised in a waltz by Johann Strauss (and then quoted by Mahler in his Ninth Symphony). Cast on the grandest scale in four movements, the Grande Sonate, Op. 41 in E Major, written in 1816, pays homage through its greater expressive and dramatic concentration to its dedicatee Beethoven. in Moscheles was capable of skilfully wrought musical structures, in which a Classical balance of thematic ideas is tempered with an early Romantic dynamism. Pathos in general, and chromaticism in particular, are not overplayed, and his music is never sentimental. The winner of several piano competitions in his native Italy, Michele Bolla specialises in music of the Classical and early-Romantic period, working on both historical and modern instruments. • Schubert: Symphony No. 8
    January 18, 2021

Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 is a composition that Schubert started composing in 1822. Commonly known as the Unfinished Symphony (Die Unvollendete), because although living for another six years, only two movements where written. The symphony is sometimes called the first Romantic symphony. It has been theorized that a finale was composed, but instead became the Entr’acte in B Minor from his Rosamunde. Another reason speculated for Schubert not completing the symphony is the predominance of the same metre. The first movement is in 3/4 , the second in 3/8 and the possible third again in ¾. Three consecutive movements in basically the same metre rarely occur in symphonies of the most Viennese composers. Although both theories are not proven. • Cuttings: Lute Music
    January 15, 2021

Composer: Francis Cutting Artist: Domenico Cerasani Online streaming and purchasing: https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/CuttingLuteMusic More information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/c/cutting-lute-music/ The only available album dedicated to a notable musician of Elizabethan England. By the time of Francis Cutting’s death in 1596 he had become among the best-known of English lutenists, and but by then his reputation as a lutenist and composer had reached far beyond the Howard family of Catholic aristocrats whom he served. As a lutenist, Cutting was probably an amateur, not a professional musician, but his works show the hand of a skilful musician and composer. His music is characterized by a preference for intricate polyphony, although he also wrote light pieces using simple homophony. In the pavans and galliards we often find a complex interplay between chordal and imitative writing. Harmonically, Cutting’s music is sometimes forward-looking, with its extensive use of sequences and occasional flashes of harmonic daring. One or two of his pieces are often encountered in compilations of Elizabethan-era recitals on record. It is much more unusual to find extended sequences of his work, much less a whole album. Yet, when heard in the round, it becomes clear that Cutting’s music belongs with the great names of the Elizabethan golden age. The serious mood of his pavans, the vitality of his galliards, the gaiety of his almains, together with his personal harmonic idiom and his inventiveness in using counterpoint, imitation and sequences, are all sure signs of a gifted and often inspired composer. Now based in Switzerland as a professor of lute and guitar at the Conservatory of St Gallen, Domenico Cerasani won critical praise for his previous Brilliant Classics album dedicated to the The Raimondo Lute Manuscript of 1601. ‘There is much to enjoy on this CD.’ (Early Music Review) ‘Cerasani has chosen his selection well; his fine technique, musicality and artistic sensitivity invite the listener to transport themselves almost directly into the sound world of a lute connoisseur of the time.’ (Amadeus) Francis Cutting (1550-1603) was one of the major lute composers of Elizabethan England, yet little is known about his life. He may not even have been a professional composer, as he is referred to as “A gentleman” and his works were not widely circulated like those of his fellow composers. Cutting’s lute works have been preserved in three manuscripts written by Matthew Holmes and in “A new booke of Tabliture’ published in 1596 in London by William Barley. • Von Herzogenberg Complete Music for Piano Duet
    January 14, 2021

Composer: Heinrich von Herzogenberg Artists: Nadia and Angela Tirino Online streaming and purchasing: https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/VonHerzogenbergPianoDuet More information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/v/von-herzogenberg-complete-music-for-piano-duet/ Almost all good Romantic-era composers knew how to have fun at the piano, all the more so with a friend. Schumann and Brahms wrote some of their most unbuttoned music in this genre, and their example was followed by Heinrich von Herzogenberg (1843–1900). From a generation after Brahms, he venerated the older man, and having maintained a relationship – somewhat strained on Brahms’s part – since their first meeting, he came in 1868 to marry Elisabeth von Stockhausen, who herself had been a pupil and close friend of Brahms, who would often write them letters together (and then more private ones to Elisabeth).often write them letters together (and then more private ones to Elisabeth). Von Herzogenberg left grand themes and forms to his many works in other genres such as quartet and oratorio. There are five variation sets here – one on a theme by Brahms, the others of his own invention – and several collections of dances, equally cheerful and often whimsical in disposition: music to be enjoyed in the playing as much as the listening. There are two collections of Allotria – from the Greek, meaning strange or foreign things – each containing three pieces, and the second set here receives its first recording. Von Herzogenberg’s handling of harmony is at its most ingenious here, and his northern-accented melodies are especially original. The sisters Nadia and Angela Tirino have played together since childhood, and they share that intimate understanding, musical instinct and equality of partnership common to first-class sibling piano-duets. Having both studied at the conservatoire in Florence, they live and work there, teaching and performing, but also joining the jury of distinguished piano competitions around the world. This von Herzogenberg release is their first internationally available album. Heinrich von Herzogenberg (1843-1900) was an Austrian composer and conductor of French aristocratic descent. In his youth he was attracted by the music of Wagner but after studying the works of J.S. Bach he turned to the classical tradition and became a strong supporter of Johannes Brahms. He married Elisabet von Stockhausen, a piano pupil of Brahms, and the three of them formed a close bond of friendship. Probably, the great relation with Brahms may be one of the main causes of the oblivion that enveloped the figure of the "composer Herzogenberg" who, although recognized as a witness and interpreter of the great German romantic tradition and capable of absolute originality and expressive refinement, has over the years the fame of simple epigon of the great Hamburger. • Sorabji: Toccata Seconda per Pianoforte
    January 12, 2021

Khaikosru Sorabji (1892-1988) is one of the most enigmatic and controversial 20-th century composers. Largely self-taught he chose his own way, never fitting into any school or movement, his style is highly idiosyncratic, inspired by late-romantics like Busoni and Szymanowski. Characteristic for his piano music are the enormous proportions and textural density of his works, some of them lasting several hours in performance, taxing the performer and audience to the utmost. Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer, Google Play): https://PianoClassics.lnk.to/SorabjiToccataSecondaID More Information: https://www.piano-classics.com/articles/s/sorabji-toccata-seconda-per-pianoforte/ Composer: Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji Artist: Abel Sánchez-Aguilera (piano) This album contains the Toccata seconda per Pianoforte by Sorabji, presented by Piano Classics, a label of Brilliant Classics. A huge Sorabji premiere on disc, and a must-hear recording for virtuoso pianophiles. The Toccata seconda for piano (1933-34) belongs to an extraordinarily fertile decade in Sorabji’s creative life that saw the composition of a series of gigantic works, from Opus Clavicembalisticum to the Symphonic Variations and Tāntrik Symphony for solo piano. At ‘merely’ two and half hours in duration, the Toccata is more modestly scaled than these works, but still a composition of ambitious scope, which has had to wait for a new generation of Sorabji performers – the Spanish Abel Sánchez-Aguilera foremost among them – to be introduced to audiences beyond the coterie of Sorabji devotees. Reflecting in both its title and its style the composer’s enduring love of Bach, the Toccata seconda consists of nine movements taking inspiration from several Baroque genres: not only the toccata itself but also chorale prelude, passacaglia, fugue, free fantasies and fast sections in perpetual motion style, which are braided with Sorabji’s idiosyncratic slow movements - in this case, a ‘tropical’ nocturne and polyphonic aria. In fact the Toccata is an admirable synthesis of Sorabji’s style, distilled into a relatively compact format. The balanced alternation of contrasting movements of moderate length, the variety of mood and form, the emphasis on melody and lyricism, the transparent textures in spite of the great pianistic challenges, all make this work particularly approachable to the listener and an excellent introduction to Sorabji’s large-scale works. A distinguished biochemist turned pianist, Abel Sánchez-Aguilera has given performances of Scriabin’s complete sonatas, the Spanish première of Sorabji’s Toccata seconda and the first performance of this work in the UK since its prèmiere in 1936. This album joins Jonathan Powell’s recent recording of the monumental Sequentia Cyclica (PCL10206) and Lukas Huisman in the Symphonic Nocturne (PCLD0119) as significant contributions to the Sorabji discography on Piano Classics. • Liszt: Piano Sonata
    January 11, 2021

Liszt noted on the sonata's manuscript that it was completed on February 2, 1853, but he had composed an earlier version by 1849. The Sonata was dedicated to Robert Schumann, in return for Schumann's dedication of his Fantasie in C major, Op. 17 to Liszt. A copy of the work arrived at Schumann's house in May 1854, after he had entered Endenich sanatorium. Schumann's wife Clara, an accomplished concert pianist and composer in her own right, did not perform the Sonata; according to scholar Alan Walker she found it "merely a blind noise". • Haydn: Seven Last Words Brilliant Classics
    January 8, 2021

Composer: Joseph Haydn Artists: Guido Pellizzari (organ) Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer, Google Play): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/Haydn7LastWords Available for licensing: More Information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/h/haydn-seven-last-words-1/ Haydn’s sublime Lenten meditations in an unusual but eminently suitable arrangement for organ. In the last few decades, Haydn’s response to Passiontide has become a popular fixture in churches across the globe, most frequently heard in the arrangement he made for string quartet. Commissioned to supply music for chamber orchestra to accompany the Good Friday service at the cathedral in Cadiz on Good Friday 1786, he quickly made the quartet arrangement, doubtless with a lucrative market in mind. The letters written by Haydn to his publisher Artaria between February and June 1787 show that the arrangements for both quartet and for keyboard had their genesis during the preparation of the original orchestral version for publication. The keyboard transcription was not undertaken by Haydn himself, but he approved it for publication, and all three versions were issued by Artaria during the summer of 1787. For years the keyboard version was considered an inferior, second-hand cousin to the quartet, yet there is increasing recognition of both the keyboard version’s authenticity and also its expressive potential, in the hands of a sympathetic artist. In his autobiography, Abbé Stadler (1748-1833) relates that he was with Haydn when the commission arrived from Cadiz. ‘He also asked me what I thought of it all. I answered that it seemed to me advisable to fit over the words an appropriate melody and then to have this performed only by instruments, in which art he was in any case a master.’ Tracklist: 0:00:00 I. • Divertimenti Viennesi: Von Dittersdorf, Vanhal & J.M. Haydn
    January 7, 2021

Stylish, historically informed performances of 18th-century chamber music for violin, viola and double-bass. Composers: Jan Krtitel vanhal, Johann Michael Haydn, Karl Ditters Von Dittersdorf Artists: Musica Elegentia, Matteo Cicchitti Online purchase and streaming: https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/DivertimentiViennesi More information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/d/divertimenti-viennesi-von-dittersdorf-vanhal-jm-haydn/ All three composers gathered together on this unique compilation were active in Vienna in the last half of the 18th century, and all had mastered the craft of writing music for pleasure – as much in the playing as the listening – rather than devotion or edification. They were also expert string players – Dittersdorf and Vanhal formed the other two members of a famous ‘composers’ quartet’ that included Joseph Haydn (younger brother to Michael) and Mozart – and so wrote these divertimentos from the inside, as it were. The Divertimenti included in the CD were composed in the 1760s. They are all fairly brief, multi-movement pieces, easy on the ear and of fairly simple construction, with the first violin taking the lion’s share of the melody. However, a little closer listening will reveal many small refinements in the secondary parts (viola e violone), which not only support the main part, but interact with it in lively musical conversation: an inter instrumental dialogue which is particularly emphasised in this recording. Michael Haydn’s C major Divertimento P.110 has the most conventional, four-movement structure, whereas Vanhal’s symmetrical design encloses a lovely Adagio within a pair of minuets, a free-flowing first movement and a syncopated finale bristling with energy and high spirits. The six trios by Dittersdorf are all two-movement pieces, pairing a quick introduction with a gentler minuet. The common but unusual element to the scoring of all the music on this album is the absence of cello in the basso continuo role, which is written down the octave to be played by a violone or double bass. This often creates a gruff or humorous character – especially in Michael Haydn’s Divertimento – but Vanhal in particular requires a musician of agility to zip up and down the instrument and writes for it as a deeper cello. • Schubert: Complete Impromptus, Moments Musicaux & Klavierstücke
    January 6, 2021

Composer: Franz Schubert Artists: Klára Würtz, Folke Nauta, Pieter van Winkel, Alberto Miodini For online purchase and streaming:https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/SchubertCompleteImpromptusMomentsmusicauxKlavierstuckeID Franz Peter Schubert (January 31, 1797 – November 19, 1828), was an Austrian composer. He wrote some six hundred romantic songs as well as many operas, symphonies, sonatas and many other works. Public appreciation of his work during his lifetime for a long time was thought to be limited, but when he died at the age of 31 over 100 of his compositions had already appeared in print. He was never able to secure adequate permanent employment and for most of his life was supported by friends or employed by his father. He died at the age of 31. Today, with his imaginative, lyrical and melodical style, he is counted among the most gifted composers of the 19th century. Early life and education: Schubert was born in the Himmelpfortgrund, a small suburb of Vienna. His father, Franz, son of a Moravian peasant, was a parish schoolmaster; his mother, Elizabeth Vietz, had before her marriage been a cook in a Viennese family. Of their fifteen children (one illegitimate child was already born in 1783) ten died in infancy; the others were Ignaz (b. 1785), Ferdinand (b. 1794), Karl (b. 1796), Franz, and a daughter Theresia (b. 1801). The father, a man of worth and integrity, possessed some reputation as a teacher, and his school, on the Himmelpfortgrund, was well attended. He was also a fair amateur musician, and transmitted his own measure of skill to his two elder sons, Ignaz and Ferdinand. At the age of five Schubert began to receive regular instruction from his father. At six he entered the Himmelpfortgrund school where he spent some of the happiest years of his life. About the same time his musical education began. His father taught him the rudiments of the violin, his brother Ignaz the rudiments of the pianoforte. At seven, having outstripped these simple teachers, he was placed under the charge of Michael Holzer, the Kapellmeister of the Lichtenthal Church. Holzer’s lessons seem to have consisted mainly in expressions of admiration, and the boy gained more from a friendly joiner’s apprentice, who used to take him to a neighboring pianoforte warehouse and give him the opportunity of practicing on a better instrument than the poor home could afford. • Kancheli: 33 Miniatures
    January 5, 2021

Giya Kancheli (1935-2019) was a Georgian composer whose intensely personal style was closely related to Minimalism and Spiritualism. He possesses a unique vision of the universe. Despite the fact that many of his compositions reflect tragic events of the modern world, they somewhat suggest turning away from horrors of war and call for return to a true meaning of life – the all-embracing love. The roots of his music are closely related with Georgian folk melos despite the fact that there are no direct quotations. Online purchase or streaming: https://PianoClassics.lnk.to/Kancheli33MiniaturesID More Information: https://www.piano-classics.com/articles/k/kancheli-33-miniatures/ Composer: Giya Kancheli, Ruben Altunyan & Sulkhan Tsintsadze Artist: George Vatchnadze (piano) & Suren Bagratuni (cello) This album contains 33 Minuatures by Kancheli, presented by Piano Classics, a label of Brilliant Classics. Music for piano and cello of simple melodies and lovable charm by three modern composers from Georgia and Armenia. The pianist George Vatchnadze was born in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi but now lives and works in Chicago as Professor of Piano at DePaul University School of Music, having studied with several renowned artists from his homeland such as Alexander Toradze. As winner of prestigious competitions including the Gina Bachauer Competition in 1994, he has given concerts across Europe and the US with the likes of Valery Gergiev and Gianandrea Noseda. For this recording he has gathered together 33 short pieces drawn from the huge oeuvre of film music composed by the greatest Georgian composer of our time, Giya Kancheli. In each piece he outlines the directorial view of a given play or a movie, and not always emphasising the condition of sorrow or nostalgia to which most of Kancheli’s music aspires. In these distillations of the written for Eldar Shelgelaya’s movies The Eccentrics, Extraordinary Exhibition and The Blue Mountains, there is a distinctive flavour of joy even in the presence of sorrow, in the mould of Georgian art by painters such as Pirosmani. Kancheli’s music for productions of Shakespeare such as King Lear and Romeo and Juliet is more lyrical, still inflected with Georgian character. The miniatures are paired with a pair of works for cello and piano. The Five Pieces on Folk Themes are among the most popular works of the Georgian composer Sultan Tsintsadze, belonging to a tradition of such pieces written by composers as far afield as Schumann and de Falla. Receiving here its first internationally distributed recording is the Cello Sonata by Ruben Altunyan, born in 1939. In his three-movement Sonata he quotes the famous Georgian folk song Tsin Tskharo, thus unifying the album in a celebration of Georgia’s rich musical culture. • How we could make carbon-negative concrete | Tom Schuler
    January 4, 2021

Take action on climate change at http://countdown.ted.com. Concrete is all around us: we use it to build our roads, buildings, bridges and much more. Yet over the last 2,000 years, the art of mixing cement and using it to bind concrete hasn't changed very much -- and it remains one of the world's biggest emitters of carbon. Entrepreneur Tom Schuler previews an innovative way to create concrete, potentially turning it into a carbon sink that traps CO2 from the atmosphere -- while producing a viable building material. This talk was part of the Countdown Global Launch on 10.10.2020. (Watch the full event here: https://youtu.be/5dVcn8NjbwY.) Countdown is TED's global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. • Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 (Romantic)
    January 4, 2021

By the time Anton Bruckner composed his Fourth Symphony in 1874, the Romantic tradition in literature and painting had long been left behind, and in music too. But since music was considered the most romantic of all the arts, and a suitable means of dissociating oneself from the vulgar materialism of the time, it was not without reason that he chose to label his new symphony ‘Romantic’. It is not ‘Romantic’ in the same way as Caspar David Friedrich’s paintings, Joseph von Eichendorff’s naturalistic poetry or E.T.A. Hoffmann’s vivid fantasies, but rather in the manner defined by Wagner. We do not know whether Bruckner was familiar with the latter’s writings, whether he was ‘influenced’ by Wagner, or developed this ‘naturalistic Romanticism’ entirely of his own accord. He was 40 years old when he became acquainted with the ‘master’s’ music. While the score of Wagner’s Das Rheingold starts on a deep E-Flat from which the entire development ensues, the same function in Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony is assumed by the sound of the horn with which the work begins and which, significantly enough, consists entirely of notes in the harmonic series. This germ even includes the ‘inner motive force’, the metric sequence of duplets and triplets. Listeners can trace the way the music takes shape, grows, develops from within itself and evolves its distinctive contours. Unlike the prelude to Das Rheingold, however, this is not a continuous process, but one born of ‘natural contrariness’.
