  • Schubert: Symphonies 8 & 9
    August 3, 2020

Composer: Franz Schubert Artists: St-Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, Vladimir Lande (conductor) A convincing answer to the bias that only Austrians can play Schubert well: also these Russian forces grasp the meaning of Schubert’s universal language, as expressed in the tragic 8-th Symphony (the Unfinished) and the Symphony No. 9, of “Heavenly Length”. After completing his 6th symphony in 1818, Schubert struggled to complete another symphony. Nos.1-6 display a deep knowledge of the symphonies of Haydn and Mozart, and his hero Beethoven – especially his 2nd symphony. The influence of Rossini can also be detected in the early symphonies. The creative crisis concerned Schubert’s attempts to find a symphonic voice that was his own. The years 1818-25 saw him commence 5 symphonies, and abandon 4 of them. Immediately after the 6th he started work on a D major work D615, but left only two unfinished opening movements. 1820 saw a more adventurous project, again in D major. The expansive and nearly complete scherzo looks forward to the Great C major’s scherzo. The other movements are fragmentary. The E major No.7 from 1821 is in a different league. Calling for the largest orchestra in any Schubert symphony, the four movements have the word ‘fine’ scribbled at the end of the score. Schubert only partially scored this work, but it provides a fascinating view to what was to come. The following year, the B minor No.8 ushered the new symphonic style Schubert has been striving to find. Dramatic and highly emotional, it is a mystery why he never completed the work. The scherzo lacks a trio, and the finale cannot be traced. It is possible that the outsized (and identically scored) entr’acte from Rosamunde was intended as the finale – it certainly resembles the finales of his earlier symphonies. The two-movement torso had to wait until 1865 for its premiere. The 9th was fully completed in 1825 – the only symphony Schubert completed in the last decade of his life. His long journey to create a ‘Great’ symphony had been achieved. The 9th is one of the towering masterworks of the repertoire. A gap of 11 years elapsed before the premiere conducted by Mendelssohn in Leipzig. Schubert commenced work his 10th symphony in 1828, a visionary work that foreshadows Mahler, it was to be his symphonic ‘swan song’ and his sixth unfinished symphony. Schubert’s 8th and 9th are the only symphonies of the period to rival those of Beethoven. Tracklist: 00:00:00 Franz Schubert: Symphony No. 8 in B Minor, D 759 ‘Unfinished’: I. • Geminiani: Cello Sonatas Op.5
    July 31, 2020

Composer: Francesco Geminiani Artists: Jaap ter Linden (cello), Lars Ulrik Mortensen (harpsichord), Judith-Maria Becker (cello) When thinking of important cello repertoire from the Baroque period of course J.S. Bach’s suites spring to mind immediately. But there is so much more out there to be discovered from this period. And not just from Germany. Italian composer and violinist Geminiani wrote just six sonatas for cello but they deserve far more attention than they are getting today. In fact Francesco Geminiani’s only set of six sonatas for cello and basso continuo is one of the finest from the Baroque era. This composer was London-based for quite a while. He then began to visit France (among other countries). When writing his cello sonatas he also drew on the French viola da gamba tradition. He combined this with his own style which was based on Corelli. But Geminiani also inserted a lot of embellishments and contrapuntal passages. These sonatas are highly attractive and expressive pieces. Especially both ones two in minor keys touch on the emotions of the listener. The sonatas are quite demanding for the performers. Unusual is Geminiani’s frequently allowing the main cello and the accompanying parts to cross. Dutch cellist Jaap ter Linden hardly needs any introduction. He is one of the leading musicians having been involved in historically informed performances from the very start. Ter Linden has made several recordings for Brilliant Classics, including Bach’s suites and sonatas by Vivaldi. His performances of these works by Geminiani are intense and lively. • Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Piano Works
    July 30, 2020

Composer: Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco Artists: Claudio Curti Gialdino (piano) Chiefly known for his film music – most famously for scoring the film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s novel And Then There Were None – Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco was also a fine instrumental composer. He was born in Florence in 1895, at a pivotal point in Italian music, being younger than the operatic generation of Verdi but he also witnessed the rise of more experimental compositional techniques during the following century. His desire to promote his Jewish roots through his music was thwarted by rising anti-Semitism in Italy, and, like many other European Jewish composers, he found a new career in Hollywood, moving to America in the summer of 1939. This release presents a selection of his works for piano. From the reminiscent Alghe (or ‘seaweed’), which features a delicate melody over shimmering Debussy- like harmonies, to Le stagioni (‘The Seasons’) and I naviganti (‘The Sailors’), Castelnuovo-Tedesco was a master at creating evocative images of provincial life through his music. His longer, more virtuosic works take on grander themes; Alt Wien is described as a ‘Viennese rhapsody’, and Piedigrotta takes us through a whirlwind of Neapolitan music, starting with a dark and pulsating tarantella, after which the music sinks gently into an undulating rhythm to evoke the image of a moonlit Neapolitan evening. Le danze del Re David reveal an unexpectedly hard edge to the composer, turning dark and violent, with movement names such as ‘rapid and savage’ and ‘warlike Allegro’, finally culminating in a ‘clear and solemn’ conclusion. Determined not to let Castelnuovo-Tedesco fade into obscurity, or be remembered only for his film music, Claudio Curti Gialdino is inspired by renowned Italian pianist Aldo Ciccolini, who has previously recorded the composer’s complete works for piano. The dedicatee of this release, Ciccolini was also Gialdino’s teacher, allowing him to create an insightful, sensitive and very personal interpretation of these works. Maria Castelnuovo-Tedesco was one of the most successful and remarkable composers of the first half of the 20th century in Italy. His style is influenced by Neo-Classicism, vivid, brilliant, with the occasional odd dissonance, strongly rhythmical and full of catchy melodies. He fled Anti-semitism before WWO2, and settled in Hollywood where he successfully composed film music for more than 200 films. The press, in the person of the influential Francois-Joseph Fétis, was enthousiastic, he praised the “spiritualized melodies, the fanciful landscapes and uniqueness in all”. Chopin himself was in love with the instrument, with “the lightness of touch and the songful singsong tone”. From then on his instrument of preference would be Pleyel. In his search for the ideal Chopin tone pianist Hubert Rutkowski studies the writings and recordings of the students of Mikuli, who himself was a student of Chopin. Notably Moritz Rosenthal and Raul Koczalski are the greatest inspirations, in their refined artistic ease, fanciful rubato and a perfect legato. Hubert Rutkowski chose a representative program, in which all facets of the Pleyel instrument and Chopin’s unique pianism are presented: Ballade, Scherzo, Mazurkas, Nocturnes, Polonaise, Etude, Waltz, Fantaisie-Impromptu. He plays a magnificent Pleyel instrument from 1847. He is the winner of the International Chopin Piano Competition in Hannover in 2007. A thorough knowledge of the music of J.S. Bach, and his attendance at the 1948 European premiere of the Concerto for Orchestra by Bartók given by the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, shaped his early language. After numerous attempts to compose in a similar style to Bartók, he produced his First Symphony in 1956. Unhappy with his compositions, and not attracted by the avant-garde, he turned to jazz and popular music, and the emergence of the New York minimalist school of Glass, Adams and Reich provided inspiration for the next phase of his compositional output. This release includes the dance-inspired Symfonietta, the jazz-infused Second Piano Concerto and the Four Songs set to the strikingly simple, moving and beautiful poems by native Americans. Devoted to the music of Liszt and later in life to Bach, Busoni wrote much that is beautiful, complex and ground-breaking. The Seven Elegies put into practice the ideas contained in his controversial pamphlet, the Sketch of a New Aesthetic of Music, which highlighted the limitations and fragility of Western music, and promoted a new musical language incorporating avant-garde devices such as bitonality and quarter-tone harmonies. The Elegies created a furore, with its disorientating tendency to switch between major and minor mode within the same musical phrase, but is a visionary masterpiece. The Fantasia Contrappuntistica, Busoni’s best known solo piano work, is a contrapuntal fantasy on Bach’s last unfinished work, Die Kunst der Fuge, almost a reinterpretation of Bach for the 20th century. It remains one of the most impressive works in the entire piano literature, a monumental undertaking that stretches the possibilities of composer, instrument and performer to the limit. Sandro Ivo Bartoli is one of the most exciting pianists of his generation, and is a leading interpreter of early twentieth century Italian piano music, particularly Casella and Malipiero, as well as Busoni. A student of Jan Wijn, Murray Perahia and Emanuel Ax, he took the second prize at the 2001 YPF National Piano Competition. At the Paris Conservatoire, he studied conducting with Peter Eötvös and John Carewe. He has a busy recital and concert schedule. For this Mendelssohn recital, de Boer has chosen some of the composer’s most brilliant and virtuosic works. The Variations sérieuses Op.54 are generally considered to be among his most successful works for solo piano. As a virtuoso pianist Mendelssohn composed many highly demanding works for his instrument. The early Sonata Op.6 shows the unmistakable influence of Beethoven and Mozart, but the Rondo capriccioso Op.14 is a wonderful example of the technical wizardry Mendelssohn was capable of. He was very friendly with the composer and pianist Ignaz Moscheles (a friend in turn of both Beethoven and Hummel), and the older man’s influence upon the young Mendelssohn’s keyboard-writing should not be underestimated. This release offers a good opportunity to sample some of Mendelssohn’s piano-writing outside of the famous Songs without Words sets that tend to overshadow his works for piano. His astonishing career on the concert platform saw him become one of the world’s most popular pianists after winning joint 1rst prize in the 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Away from his life as a pianist, he was privately a very passionate composer throughout his career, he wrote appr. 200 works, primarily for his own instrument, the piano. During his time studying at the Royal Manchester College of Music he was a founding member of the group New Music Manchester, and he became an advocate for the piano music of his fellow members and inspirators Peter Maxwell Davies, Harrison Birtwhistle and Ronal Stevenson. Ogdon constructed his piano pieces using a kaleidoscopic collage technique that throws around ideas in a potpourri of interesting colours and contrasts. Despite the enormous technical complexities the piano writing is wonderfully idiomatic, in the tradition of Liszt, Alkan, Scriabin, Rachmaninoff and Busoni. Young British pianist Tyler Hay has the technique and imagination in full measure to present this fascinating piano music, which has remained unheard too long. Recorded in the presence of Ogdon’s widow Brenda Lucas, who provided the manuscripts and valuable information as to the performance of the music.
