  • J.S. Bach: French Suites, BWV 812-817
    July 27, 2021

A new recording from a Bach luminary of our time: the French Suites, returned to their original context as private music for entertainment and instruction. Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach Artists: Wolfgang Rübsam (lute-harpsichord) Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/BachFrenchSuitesBWV812-817ID More Information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/j/js-bach-french-suites-bwv812-817/ The title of French Suites does not originate from Bach’s hand: they were called “Suites pour le clavessin” by the composer. To judge from the number of copies made by his pupils, they likely played a significant role in domestic music-making in Bach’s home and in his teaching, and they remain among the most approachable of Bach’s keyboard works for performer and listener alike. As in the English Suites, Bach included the customary sequence of allemande, courante, sarabande and gigue, with additional short movements between the sarabande and gigue. Unlike the English Suites, however, they have no preludes and are generally of a more modest scale, both less stylized and less demanding in technical terms. Wolfgang Rübsam is internationally known as an authoritative Bach interpreter, from recordings of the organ and harpsichord on several different labels. He has recorded the French Suites before, on the piano. Made in March 2020, this new account is played on the kind of lute-harpsichord that Bach would have had at home for both music-making in the family and for teaching. The touch required and the sonority produced is delicate, subtly shaded and closely related in its effect to the music of Bach’s French contemporaries, whose music he knew well, such as François Couperin, Jean-Philippe Rameau and Louis Marchand. The cantabile style of playing heard in these marvellous performances is directly inspired by the instrument, a lute-harpsichord built for Mr. Rübsam in 2015 by the acclaimed American instrument-maker Keith Hill. • Mucha: Chamber Music
    July 26, 2021

World premiere recordings, reviving the individual voice and fine craftsmanship of a forgotten English-Czech composer writing in the middle of the last century. Composer: Geraldine Much Artists: Stamic Quartet, Prague Wind Quintet, Patricia Goodson (piano), Vilém Veverka (oboe), Jan Machat (flute) Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/MuchaChamberMusicBC More Information: brilliantclassics.com/articles/m/mucha-chamber-music/ Born in London in 1917, Geraldine Mucha learnt to read music before words; her Scottish father, Marcus Thomson, taught at the Royal Academy of Music. Having turned 18 she became a student there herself, and at a party in 1941 she met her future husband, Jan Mucha, an exiled Czech war correspondent and son of the artist Alphonse Mucha. They settled in his home city of Prague at the end of the war, but Geraldine fled the Communist regime for Scotland after the invasion of Prague in 1968, and returned only after the fall of Communism in 1989. Jiří died in 1991 but Geraldine lived on until 2012, leaving a fair-sized body of instrumental music which had been performed throughout her lifetime but is only now being rediscovered. Only one other disc of Mucha’s work is available, dedicated to her orchestral music. This newly available album, made in Prague in 2015, begins with the First String Quartet which she wrote in 1944 as a recent RAM graduate: a tight, well-argued work, inflected by the fiercely rhythmic folk idiom of Janáček and Bartók. There follows a collection of seven piano works including her most extensive piece for the instrument, a set of variations on an ‘Old Scottish Song’ which also shows a thorough command of a central-European idiom The single-movement Second String Quartet dates from 1970 opens with a keening, Scottish-accented lament: taut and concise, both concealing and saying much in a short span. The Wind Quintet is a late work, from 1998, still elegiac in mood but now balanced by the kind of dance-like flow and momentum placing it in the tradition of wind-ensemble works from Mozart to Poulenc. This carefully programmed album ends with the Epitaph for oboe and string quintet which she composed in 1991 in memory of her late husband. At a time when the music of past women composers is finally receiving its due, this album dedicated to Geraldine Mucha deserves the attention of all listeners in search of new, expressive worlds. • J.S. Bach: The Church Cantatas, Vol. 17: Erforsche mich, Gott, und erfahre mein Herz, BWV 136
    July 24, 2021

The opening chorus of BWV 136 (18 July 1723), the prayer of Psalm 139 for God to search our hearts, is a beautiful fugue, the fugue proper being preceded by the sopranos singing the theme. It has been suggested that the work is based on an older cantata, but the chorus works very well in its own right. It was reused by Bach in the Mass in A BWV 234. An expressive tenor recitative is followed by an alto aria with a beautifully flowing line for the oboe d’amore. `Erzittern’ is graphically illustrated. The more lively middle part deals with God’s anger over hypocrisy. After a bass recitative with an attractive arioso there is a tenor/bass duet with an interesting violin part, the violin `falling’ on `Adams Fall’, and with long runs on `Strom’. A beautiful fifth voice for the violin characterizes the final chorale. Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach Artists: Netherlands Bach Collegium, Holland Boys Choir, Pieter Jan Leusink (conductor), Nico van der Meel (Tenore), Sytse Buwalda (Alto) & Bas Ramselaar (Basso) Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer): Tracklist: Erforsche mich, Gott, und erfahre mein Herz, BWV 136: 00:00 I. • Debussy, Fauré: Music for two harps
    July 24, 2021

French (piano) music makes quite suitable arrangements for the harp, and even better for two harps. Their refined sound combined with both clarity and a certain opaqueness makes them an ideal vehicle for the ‘typically French’ atmosphere. Composer: César Auguste Franck, Claude Debussy, Gabriel Fauré, Maurice Ravel Artists: Duo Bilitis, Ekaterina Levental, Eva Tebbe Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/LeJardinFeerique More Information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/l/le-jardin-f%C3%A9erique-music-for-two-harps/ This duo of young Dutch harp players has chosen a program of well-known French piano repertoire, partly for four hands. It consists of arrangements of Debussy’s Children’s Corner, Fauré’s Dolly Suite and of parts Ravel’s Ma mère l’Oye, together with Franck’s Prelude, fugue and variations. Both harpists, Ekaterina Levental and Eva Tebbe, prove their point convincingly. This music suits the harps to the bone, and both musicians play their instruments with all the necessary charm and intensity. The result is a delightful CD with well-known music in a different attire. • Medtner Incantation Complete Songs Vol. 1
    July 23, 2021

Medtner’s legacy for solo piano is now widely esteemed alongside Rachmaninov and other giants of the Russian ‘silver age’: melodists to their core, romantics at heart, yet rigorous craftsmen to their fingertips, who took their muse seriously and refined their inspiration to distil a peculiarly Russian spirit of melancholy in sound. Composers: Nikolai Medtner Artists: Ekaterina Levental (mezzo soprano) Frank Peters (piano) Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/MedtnerCompleteVol1BC More Information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/m/medtner-incantation-complete-songs-vol-1/ However, around a third of Medtner’s output, measured by opus numbers, was dedicated to voices, and this section of his music has received much less attention. Ekaterina Levental has dedicated herself to correcting this imbalance. The Uzbek-born, Dutch-resident mezzo-soprano has given all of Medtner’s songs in concert with the pianist Frank Peters; together, they now embark on a recorded cycle. Medtner lacked nothing for self-sacrificing dedication to his art, and he chose to set the finest poets of his Russian homeland: Pushkin, Fet, Lermontov and others, and then Goethe and Eichendorff in German. Unlike Rachmaninov he continued to write songs even after emigrating and settling in London. Tracklist: 3 Romances, Op. 3: 0:00:00 I. At the Gates of the Holy Cloister 0:03:04 II. • Wolf-Ferrari: The Two Piano Trios
    July 21, 2021

Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) focused on instrumental music at the beginning and towards the end of a career that was otherwise largely devoted to opera. The two trios for violin, cello and piano are early works, written at the time he was studying in Munich, or shortly afterwards. The first Trio in D major dates back to 1896, was premiered at the Tonkünstlerverein in Stuttgart in September of that same year and published as Op.5 in 1902 by Leuckart in Leipzig. Composer: Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari Artist: Trio Archè Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/WolfFerrari More Information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/w/wolf-ferrari-the-two-piano-trios/ The four movements of Op.5 abound in richly embroidered, Brahmsian melodies and impassioned statements and developments, free of the naivety that is often a feature of early works. That said, they do embody a certain innocence, a degree of gentleness, even a lightness of spirit that sets them apart from their composer’s study of German models withteachers such as the organist Joseph Rheinberger. Parts of the Op.7 Trio may in fact have been written before Op.5, but the expression of the three-movement work as a whole is more individual, dominated as it is by a huge opening movement (almost 20 minutes in length), and often coloured by a bitter chromaticism that Wolf-Ferrari would later relinquish in favour of a more light-hearted and lyrical idiom. Here is a technically gifted young composer stretching his creative muscles – and for all the breadth of expression, his writing for the notoriously tricky combination of instruments is notably sympathetic, allowing the two string instruments to flourish without being overwhelmed by the piano. This new studio album is the second recording of Trio Archè for Brilliant Classics after their well-received debut of trios by another Italian composer, now even less familiar than Wolf-Ferrari, Marco Enrico Bossi (BC95581). Both albums make a readyappeal to all those listeners who travel the musical byways of late Romanticism. Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari (1876-1948) is a composer difficult to classify. A child of his time he kept aloof from the innovations of the modernists and dodecaphony. As son of a German father and a noble-born Venetian mother he was born in Venice and went to study in Munich. He became famous as an opera composer, his chamber music remained largely neglected. The two piano trios on this new recording are early works, written around the turn of the century. They follow the line Schumann-Mendelssohn-Brahms, eschewing heavy density, but instead displaying a certain aristocratic levity, an enlightened simplicity. Played by the Italian Trio Archè, founded in 2001. Tracklist: 00:00:00 Piano Trio No. 1 in D Major, Op. 5: I. Allegro molto moderato 00:14:54 Piano Trio No. 1 in D Major, Op. 5: II. • Alkan: Paraphrases, Marches & Symphonie
    July 20, 2021

British pianist Mark Viner continues his complete Alkan-cycle with the 4th volume, containing one of the most extraordinary piano works of the 19th century, the Symphony for piano solo. It is one of Alkan’s most darkly impassioned conceptions, its declamatory rhetoric, passionate outbursts and towering climaxes all bound by a tightly organised structure. The sometimes ten note chords, thick, chordal tremoli and volleys of double octaves create a truly symphonic sound spectrum. Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer): https://PianoClassics.lnk.to/AlkanSoloPianoID More Information: https://www.piano-classics.com/articles/a/alkan-paraphrases-marches-symphonie-for-solo-piano-op39/ Composer: Charles Henri Valentin Alkan Artist: Mark Viner (piano) The latest volume in a revelatory Alkan series from an English pianist with a string of critically acclaimed albums of rare repertoire from the Golden Age of the piano virtuoso to his credit. Perhaps the most enigmatic figure in the history of music as a whole, let alone the 19th century, Charles-Valentin Alkan remains one of the most intriguing and alluring names among the pantheon of pianist-composers. According to Franz Liszt, Alkan possessed the finest technique he had ever seen yet preferred the life of a recluse. The outstanding masterpiece of the album is the ‘Symphonie’ for solo piano which Alkan drew from his set of 12 Studies Op. 39. It opens with an Allegro which is one of the composer’s most darkly impassioned conceptions, in which declamatory rhetoric, passionate outbursts and towering climaxes are all bound by a tightly organised structure. The piano writing is distinctly orchestral in nature, hence the ‘symphonic’ designation, demanding that the intrepid soloist make his or her way through towering conglomerations of sometimes ten note chords, thick, chordal tremoli and volleys of double octaves: only fully accredited virtuosi need apply! The Symphonie is placed on this album as the climax to a sequence of grand marches conceived on a similarly grand scale. They include the Three Cavalry Marches Op.39, which find Alkan at his most concise, in the Berliozian No.1, his most eccentric (the trio of No.2) and whimsical (No.3). Like them, the Marche funèbre Op.26 bears witness to Alkan’s ability to channel a latent and, at times, menacing power through material of the slightest substance. The following Marche triomphale Op.27 is a massive, swaggering affair, in contrast to the ruminative melancholy of the opening paraphrase Op.45 on a poem by Legouvé set in a cemetery and cast in Alkan’s most elegiac vein. A profound sadness also inflects the opening section of the composer’s ingenious instrumental setting of Psalm 137, ‘By the waters of Babylon’. • Kuhlau: 7 Flute Trios
    July 19, 2021

Lively charm in abundance from ‘the Beethoven of the flute’: chamber music from the ‘Danish Golden Age’ of the early 19th century in accomplished new recordings by a German-based trio of fine young musicians making their debut on Brilliant Classics. Composer: Friedrich Kuhlau Artist: Flute East Trio Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/Kuhlau7FluteTriosID More Information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/k/kuhlau-7-flute-trios/ Born in Hamburg in 1786, the son of a military bandsman, Friedrich Kuhlau showed early musical promise and took lessons with a student of CPE Bach. When Napoleon’s troops invaded Hamburg in 1810, the 24-year-old Kuhlau fled with his family to Copenhagen, and there he made his name as a pianist and composer to the royal court. Taking Danish citizenship in 1813, he worked in the vanguard of the country’s fast-moving cultural scene, enjoying huge success as a composer of operas and incidental music. However, his financial position remained precarious, and his prodigious output of chamber music was written not least to exploit and satisfy the market for congenial music-making among the growing Danish bourgeoisie. Kuhlau was himself a flautist of modest accomplishment, but the popularity of salon culture in Denmark increased the demand for flute and piano music - which were both fashionable at the time - to such an extent that Kuhlau complained, in a letter to his publisher in 1829, about having too many commissions. While a flautist of modest accomplishment himself, Kuhlau wrote with unfailing craft, sympathy and imagination for the instrument – his works are standard repertoire even today for countless students – and before their publication he submitted his new works for approval from the principal flautist of the Court Chapel’s orchestra. • J.S. Bach: The Church Cantatas, Vol. 16: Was willst du dich betrüben, BWV 107
    July 17, 2021

BWV 107 was written for 23 July 1724. The whole work is based on one chorale, and the text of the different verses is used unchanged. The opening chorus has the chorale melody in the sopranos. The instrumental opening loosely refers to the chorale melody, the chorale lines are woven into the musical structure in a beautiful way, the name Immanuel (`God with us') at the end of line 4 being singled out for special treatment. The bass recitative shows Bach's ingenuity in transforming the tight structure of a chorale verse into a recitative. Four arias follow, all without da capo, treating the chorale text in different ways. The bass aria, an encouragement to doubting believers, is an exciting dance introduced by a fascinating little theme in the continuo. After a tenor aria with continuo, and a soprano aria in which the last line of the chorale melody is heard, another tenor aria is again a joyful dance, with long notes illustrating the words warte and feste. Trust in God is also the theme of the richly illustrative chorale, a siciliano of great beauty. Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach Artists: Netherlands Bach Collegium, Holland Boys Choir, Pieter Jan Leusink (conductor), Bas Ramselaar (Basso) Nico van der Meel (Tenore) & Ruth Holton (Soprano) Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/JSBachChurchCantatasVol16ID Tracklist: Was willst du dich betrüben, BWV 107: 00:00 I.
