  • Asencio: Complete Guitar Music
    April 16, 2021

Composer: Vicente Asencio Artist: Alberto Mesirca (guitar) Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer, Google Play): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/AsencioGuitarMusic More Information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/a/asencio-complete-guitar-music/ As a teacher of piano, theory and composition at the conservatoire in Valencia, Vicente Asencio (1908-1979) played an instrumental part in the success of Narciso Yepes and countless other influential Spanish musicians in the middle of the 20th century. His role as a teacher has unfairly overshadowed his own creative output, which now justly takes the spotlight in the talented hands of the Italian guitarist Alberto Mesirca. Asencio’s output for guitar has previously been investigated on record, including by the young Elise Neumann on Brilliant Classics (BC9287) but this is the first-ever album dedicated to his guitar music. Perhaps unsurprisingly, given his established reputation as a teacher, it reveals a composer of considerable craft and fluency, entirely at home in his adopted medium. Valencian born and bred, Asencio composed a Suite of Homages that became a calling-card for Yepes and other Spanish guitarists looking to play music of their own era that had something distinctive to say about modern Spain to an international audience. In turn, the homages pay tribute to Scarlatti, de Falla and Lorca, and between them they sum up the ingredients of Asencio’s style: the ruminative grace of the Sonatina, the evocative melancholy of the Elegia, and the fiery sensuality of the Tango. • Eberl: Complete Piano Sonatas
    April 15, 2021

Anton Eberl was born in Vienna June 13, 1765 and was one of the most renowned piano virtuosos and composers of his time, standing comparison with Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. Eberl was even "one of Beethoven’s most dangerous rivals” (as Anton Schindler wrote) and in April 1805 Eberl’s Symphony Op. 33 was played at the concert in which Beethoven’s “Eroica” was heard for the first time and public and critics preferred Eberl’s one. Composer: Anton Eberl Artists: Luca Quintavalle (fortepiano) Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer, Google Play): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/EberlPianoSonatasID More Information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/e/eberl-complete-piano-sonatas/ A Viennese contemporary of Mozart and Beethoven, praised by Haydn and Gluck, and forerunner of Chopin and Liszt: the unique voice of Anton Eberl in new, historically informed studio recordings. Born in 1765, the same year as Mozart, Anton Eberl also displayed great musical talent from an early age. Only his father’s bankruptcy saved him from a legal career, however, and he threw himself into the world of music with such success that even during their own lifetimes pieces of Eberl appeared under Mozart’s name. The earliest of these (published at least 14 times as Mozart’s, never as Eberl’s) was a set of variations on Ignaz Umlauf’s Zu Steffen sprach im Traume, one of Mozart’s favourite teaching pieces. After Mozart’s death Eberl made concert tours with his widow Constanze and her sister Aloysia Lange, accomplished sopranos both, and became director of music at the court of the Russian royal family in St Petersburg. Having returned to Vienna, he had a Symphony in E flat performed at the same concert as the premiere of Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ – and contemporary audiences preferred Eberl’s work! Yet his name rather died with him, in 1807, and so it has been left to modern performers such as Luca Quintavalle to revive Eberl for a new generation of listeners. He was highly regarded in his time as a composer for theatre, but most of his operas are now lost, and his largest surviving body of work is written for keyboard. These seven piano sonatas by themselves should restore his name to a senior rank of Viennese composers around the turn of the 18th century. Eberl made uncommonly ambitious use of minor-key tonalities for his time; there are two G minor sonatas of which the second, Op.39, probably counts as his masterpiece, for its fiery inspiration and breadth of expression. • Tartini: Violin Concertos, Sonatas
    April 14, 2021

Laura Marzadori pairs these delightful discoveries with two D major sonatas written not for the standard trio-sonata disposition of violin, bass and harpsichord, but rather an instrumentation that anticipates the string quartet. Their writing is full of bold harmonic moves as well as typically brilliant figuration for the violin, most elegantly dispatched here by Marzadori on her Guadagnini violin. Giuseppe Tartini (Pirano d'Istria 1692 - Padua 1770) was a virtuoso violinist, composer, theoretician and teacher, a spider in the international cultural web in a time when Italy was the centre of the musical world, his violin school, the “School of Nations”, attracted musicians from all over Europe. Tartini’s 4 part Sonatas are modeled in 3 movements, fast-slow-fast, and bear witness of the incredible skill of Tartini’s string playing. They are highly melodious works of great beauty and charm. The two Violin Concertos are virtuoso works, paving the way for the great concertos from the classical and romantic era. Excellent performances by violinist Laura Marzadori and the Ferruccio Busoni Chamber Orchestra conducted by Massimo Belli, who already successfully recorded similar works by Czerny, Viotti, Rolla and orchestral works by Wolf-Ferrari. Composer: Giuseppe Tartini Artists: Laura Marzadori (violin), Nuova Orchestra da Camera "Ferruccio Busoni", Massimo Belli (conductor) First recordings of concertos by a legendary virtuoso of the Italian Baroque. Concert master at the Teatro alla Scala since 2014, Laura Marzadori studied with Salvatore Accardo and Giuliano Carmignola, as well as playing in the Orchestra Mozart under Claudio Abbado. She has given chamber-music concerts with internationally renowned soloists such as Antonio Meneses, Andrea Lucchesini and Bruno Giuranna, and worked as a concert master for some of the world’s great conductors, including Daniel Barenboim, Riccardo Chailly and Antonio Pappano. She gave the world premiere performances of Respighi’s Violin Concerto in 2011, followed by a warmly received recording of the piece. She has also recorded the beautiful but little-known concerto by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari. • Leclair: Complete Violin Concertos
    April 12, 2021

Jean-Marie Leclair (1697-1764) was born in Lyon, the son of an amateur musician. He quickly developed his skills on the violin and became a traveling virtuoso, performing in France, Germany and Italy, thus also becoming acquainted with the great violin virtuosos of his time: Locatelli, Quantz and Corelli’s circle. He introduced in France a violin school based on his famous Italian examples, but with a strong personal style. This new recording presents Leclair’s complete Violin Concertos. The high technical and musical level earned him the nickname “The Corelli of France”. The solo violin passages are written with a keen eye to violin technique: arpeggios, double and triple stops, bariolages, leaps and virtuoso passages lend colour, breadth and variety. Russian violinist Igor Ruhadze was trained in his native Moscow as a virtuoso on the modern violin. However, his interest took him into early music, playing with such ensembles as Musica ad Rhenum, Jed Wentz and others. His solid technique enables him to tackle the often fearful difficulties of Leclair’s music with ease, charm and brilliance. His ensemble Violini Capricciosi on original instruments, and follow the Historically Informed Performance Practice. Composer: Jean Marie Leclair Artists: Igor Ruhadze (violin) After their internationally acclaimed recordings of sonatas and concertos by Pietro Locatelli, Ensemble Violini Capricciosi and their founder/director Igor Ruhadze turn their attention to his most talented pupil, Jean-Marie Leclair. The stylish idiom and sensivity of this period string ensemble’s previous recordings for Brilliant Classics has won wide critical praise. Concerning their 5CD set of Locatelli’s Sonatas Opp. 8 & 12: ‘Brilliant’s collection should prove a most enjoyable, most entertaining, and, at times, moving experience… Strongly recommended, therefore, across the board’ (Fanfare, July 2013). ‘The Ensemble Violini Capricciosi, founded and led by Igor Ruhadze, who have bravely taken up the cause of performing the virtuoso violin repertory on period instruments, emerge from these recordings as fine advocates… The exuberant Op. 8 sonatas are here brilliantly and at times breathtakingly performed’ (Gramophone, December 2012). Born in Lyon, Leclair (1697-1764) travelled widely as a young man thanks to his prowess as a violinist, dancer and lace-maker. He created a sensation in Turin as well as Rome, and then on a visit to the German town of Kassel he met the foremost Italian violinist of the age, Pietro Locatelli. Leclair’s own music became even more virtuosically refined thanks to the influence of Locatelli, who became the dedicatee of his first set of concertos, Op.7. Having taken up and then left a prestigious post at the French royal court, Leclair encountered Locatelli once more in Amsterdam, but he soon moved on and lived a somewhat restless life, murdered outside his front door, probably by his nephew. • J.S. Bach: The Church Cantatas, Vol. 2: Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats, BWV 42
    April 10, 2021

An example of a real gem within Bach's work is Cantata 42 ‘Am Abend aber desselbigen Sabbats’, composed for Sunday 8 April 1725, the 1st Sunday after Easter, otherwise known as Quasimodogeniti. This name originates from the opening text for Mass on this Sunday, Quasimodo geniti infantes, meaning ‘as new-born babes’. Bach commences the cantata with an instrumental Sinfonia somewhat reminiscent of the Brandenburg Concertos and probably based on a lost instrumental work. In this first movement the wind group (two oboes and bassoon) competes with a string group (two violins and viola). The cantata comprises seven movements: the opening sinfonia is followed by two recitatives, two arias and two chorales, firstly ‘Verzage nicht, du Häuflein klein’, and as final chorale ‘Verleih’ uns Frieden gnädiglich’. • Beethoven: Complete Piano Sonatas Vol. 2
    April 9, 2021

Volume 2 of the Complete Piano Sonatas played by Giovanni Bellucci, contains the Sonatas Op. 22 till Op. 57, roughly named the Middle Period Beethoven (1770-1827). Giovanni Bellucci is one of the most interesting and extraordinary pianists of today. Described by Piero Rattalino as “a force of nature, vast and palpitating”, his playing is highly original, striving to recreate the original impact of the works he is playing: “he takes us back to the Golden Age of the Piano” wrote Le Monde. His recordings, notably with works by Liszt, were showered with prizes such as Diapason d’Or, Choc, Editor’s Choice, CD Maestro etc. Bellucci’s Beethoven is free, with a strong sense of rhetoric and improvisation, adhering nevertheless strictly to the score and its intentions. The result is fresh, exhilarating and illuminating, letting us marvel at the originality and genius of the music. “Exhilarating, brilliant..never a dull moment..grandiosity of vision..”, as Fanfare wrote enthusiastically about Volume 1. Composer: Ludwig van Beethoven Artists: Giovanni Bellucci (piano) The second volume of Giovanni Bellucci’s Beethoven cycle for Brilliant Classics takes the listener on a journey of six eventful years, from Op.22 of 1800 to the ‘Appassionata’ Sonata of 1806. During that time Beethoven established himself as Vienna’s pre-eminent pianist-composer. He came to regard Op.22 as the best of his ‘early’ sonatas but a sea-change in the deepening of his expression is already evident in the piano-writing of Op.26, with its funeral march ‘in memory of a hero’. There follow the remarkable formal innovations of the Op.27 pair – No.2 immortally inscribed on the popular imagination as the ‘Moonlight’ – and then the smooth, undulating rhythms of the ‘Pastorale’ Op.28. The trio of Op.31 sonatas present a study in contrasts, from the graceful profile of No.1 in G major to the sound and fury of the ‘Tempest’ No.2 and then the hectic momentum of No.3, presaging the concision of works at the end of his ‘middle’ period such as the ‘Serioso’ Quartet and the Eighth Symphony. The proportions of the two-movement Op.54 are even more tautly circumscribed, before the reach of Beethoven’s expressive range for his instrument expands to hitherto undreamt heights in the ‘Waldstein’ Op.53 and the ‘Appassionata’ Op.57. • Van Eyck: Der Fluyten Lust Hof
    April 8, 2021

On this release, young Dutch recorder player Erik Bosgraaf tackles a selection of 65 works from Van Eyck’s opus. Playing on (copies of) period instruments he treats this music freely almost suggesting improvisation on the spot. A truly outstanding recording debut by a musician who has already left his mark on recorder performance. Composer: Jacob van Eyck Artist: Erik Bosgraaf (recorder) Exhilarating music from the Golden Age. Or, how a single recorder might surprise even a 21st-century audience with its virtuosity. Jacob van Eyck Esquire was a contemporary of Rembrandt’s. Unlike the famous painter he mainly resided in Utrecht, city of many churches in the centre of The Netherlands. At the time the blind composer and city carillonneur was also well-known for his improvised virtuoso recorder playing. As such he was quite an unusual phenomenon. Even now some three and a half centuries later one can sense the breathtaking qualities of his music from Der Fluyten Lust-hof, The flute’s garden of delight’. This collection of Dutch music consists of a variety of pieces, mainly series of variations on psalms and popular songs: almost 150 in all. • Lebègue: Les Pièces de Clavessin, Books I & II
    April 7, 2021

Nicolas Lebègue (1631-1702) spent most of his life at the Court of the Sun King Louis XIV in Versailles, where he was court organist, but also played an active part in all of the manifold musical activities at the court, such as playing the harpsichord for the King, participating in the court orchestra and accompanying famous visiting musicians. Composer: Nicolas Lebègue Artists: Agustín Álvarez (harpsichord) Nicolas Lebègue (1631-1702) is largely represented in the record catalogue by albums of organ music. Yet his pieces for harpsichord are no less distinctive and appealing in their way, and this new recording presents a rare chance to survey that side of his output in toto. Known in his day among the most renowned organists of Paris, Lebègue left to us three books of organ music, and this pair of volumes for harpsichord. Their style may owe something to the examples of Chambonnières and Louis Couperin, but there are notable differences. Lebègue tends to underplay the pictorial or illustrative potential of his genre, and emphasise instead its natural language of formal elegance. Such formality is reflected in the organization of his suites, which open with an allemande–courante coupling, preceded only in his first book by unmeasured preludes. After the courante there follows a mixture of dances, always poised and gracefully turned. Particular high-points include the Chaconne in C (first book) and the Chaconne grave in G (second book), which attain a stature worthy of Louis Couperin. In a personal, engaging but also scholarly booklet essay, Agustín Álvarez outlines his approach: ‘not only as a musician, but from the point of view of a dancer, trying to understand the steps, as well as the physical and intellectual attitudes which mould the sublime art of movement of French Baroque dance and which Nicolas Lebègue gradually reveals to us as a ceremonial master of his art.’ Born in Venezuela and trained in in Madrid and Milan, Álvarez also studied Baroque dance and continues to work with an important Spanish dance company. In 2015 he recorded the Concertos for Two Harpsichords by Soler: a Brilliant Classics album (BC95327) that attracted praise from distinguished quarters: ‘These French-styled harpsichords have beautiful tone… Alvarez and Fernandez make the music sound noble and even sometimes sombre’ (American Record Guide, March 2017). • Röntgen: Orchestral, Choral & Chamber Music
    April 6, 2021

Julius Röntgen (1855-1932) was born in Leipzig to a Dutch father, who was concertmaster of the famous Gewandhaus Orchester, and a German mother, a pianist. He trained as a pianist and performed Brahms’ 2nd Piano Concerto under the baton of the composer himself. In 1878 he moved to Amsterdam, The Netherlands, where he stayed the rest of his life, becoming an important member of the musical society, co-founding the Amsterdam Conservatory and the Concertgebouw. Composer: Julius Röntgen Artists: Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra, Jac van Steen (conductor), Netherlands Chamber Choir, Viotta Ensemble, Alexander Kerr (violin), Gregor Horsch (cello) & Sepp Grotenhuis (piano) Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer, Google Play): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/RontgenOCCID Available for licensing: https://www.brilliantclassicslicensing.com/albums/rontgen-orchestral-choral-chamber-music/ More Information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/r/roentgen-orchestral-choral-chamber-music/ A late-Romantic Symphony, Serenade, motets and chamber music by the composer and teacher who energised Dutch musical life for over half a century. In February 1896, Clara Schumann described Julius Röntgen in a letter to Johannes Brahms: 'He has remained a child, so innocent, pure, open, enthusiastic… But we certainly can and must take him seriously.’ Brahms certainly agreed, and stole from the younger composer a theme from the Serenade which opens this compilation, for use in his own Second Symphony; when Röntgen pointed this out, he was the recipient of a rare apology from Brahms. Born in 1855, Röntgen grew up in Leipzig, the son of the leader of the Gewandhaus orchestra. As a boy he met Liszt, having already composed music for the likes of Joseph Joachim. His move to Amsterdam in 1877 launched a multifaceted career as a pianist, conductor and teacher who continued to compose prolifically in all the classical genres. He became friends with Grieg, who dedicated a volume of Lyric Pieces to him, and much of his own output convincingly welds Austro-German forms with a fresh, Scandinavian-accented simplicity of expression. This portrait of Röntgen ranges across his diverse output, from the Serenade of 1876 to one of the symphonies he wrote late in life, a single-movement form composed in 1930 with a soprano vocalise. A youthful and joyous Violin Sonata of 1879 was composed for the violinist Amanda Maier, who would soon become his first wife; its high spirits are shared by the Theme and Variations for two pianos from the previous year. The Cello Sonata Op.56 is dedicated to the memory of a friend and adapts the final chorus of Bach’s St Matthew Passion. His Sixth Piano Trio Op.50 opens in high Brahmsian style with a passionate main melody and a tender slow movement. A trio of motets dates from the 1920s and features some of his most daring harmonies, before the Symphony strikes a vein of pastoral contemplation akin to the Sinfonia Espansiva of Nielsen, who had also become a friend. • Pizzetti & Castelnuovo-Tedesco: Arioso
    April 5, 2021

Composers: Ildebrando Pizzetti, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco Artists: Amedeo Cicchese (cello), Barbara Panzarella (piano) Online purchase and streaming: https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/PizzettiCastelnuovoID More information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/p/pizzetti-castelnuovo-tedesco-arioso/ A unique but logical coupling on record: lyrical cello sonatas of ready melodic appeal, superbly written for the instrument by two 20th-century Italian composers who remained aloof from both the lure of verismo and the tenets of modernism. Any cellist seeking new repertoire, and any listener in search of Romantic cello sonatas beyond Brahms, will alight upon this album with enthusiasm. Although Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) studied under Ildebrando Pizzetti (1880-1968) at the Conservatoire in Florence during the early years of the 20th century, their paths diverged when the Jewish Castelnuovo-Tedesco had to emigrate to the US in 1938. Back in 1921 Pizzetti had composed a Cello Sonata thematically unified across its three movements, with an ‘agitated andanguished’ Scherzo at its heart, while the slow outer movements translate elements of medieval chant and polyphony into soulful meditations. Three years later he composed a cycle of Tre Canti – three songs more commonly encountered in the version for violin and piano but better suited to the pitch and expressive range of the cello, so closely moulded to that of the human voice. And these really are ‘songs without words’ – by turns affectionate, tender and impassioned. The younger Castelnuovo-Tedesco was more concerned to establish a mood than to tell a story in his instrumental music, and the first movement of his Cello Sonata from 1928 is an object example of his tendency to face both backwards and forwards, artistically speaking, so that he can evoke Romanticism while simultaneously casting doubt upon its certainties and view them from an anxious distance. The album is rounded off with the delicious fantasy on the Largo al factotum and ‘Un voce po’ fa’ from Il barbiere di Siviglia which Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed in two versions, for Jascha Heifetz and Gregor Piatigorsky, having emigrated and become a fixture on the Hollywood musical scene. • J.S. Bach: The Church Cantatas, Vol. 1: Easter Oratorio, BWV 249
    April 4, 2021

The Easter Oratorio BWV 249, the first of the three works Bach called an Oratorio (the Christmas Oratorio BWV 248 and the Ascension Oratorio BWV 11 are the later examples), is compiled of earlier material conceived for secular purposes. The original composition was a congratulatory cantata (BWV 249a) written for the birthday of Duke Christian of Saxony‐Weissenfels (1682–1736) and performed on 23 February 1725. The music for this cantata was promptly re‐used for a liturgical work celebrating the first Easter feria of the same year (i.e. 1 April 1725). Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach Artists: Christine Brenk (soprano), Anne Greiling (alto), Frank Bossert (tenor), Thomas Pfeiffer (bass), Trompetenensemble Pfeiffer, Motettenchor Pforzheim, Südwestdeutsches Kammerorchester Pforzheim, Rolf Schweizer (conductor) Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer, Google Play): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/JSBachChurchCantatasVol1ID The composition consists of eleven numbers, of which the first two (Sinfonia and Adagio) are purely instrumental, almost certainly taken from a concerto, one of the many written at Köthen, just as it is probable that No.3 of the Oratorio (a duet, then transformed into a chorus in a revival of the work that took place after 1740) might well have been the original concluding Allegro of this or some other concerto. The concerto style manifest in the first three movements of the cantata is followed by the style of the suite, found in the later movements. Thus, No.5 is a Tempo di minuetto, No.7 is a Bourrée, No.9 a Gavotte and No. 11 a Gigue. There is no cause for surprise here: examples of dance forms applied to arias in liturgical cantatas are extremely frequent in Bach (one could enumerate at least a hundred). The galant style was, therefore, a banner under which Bach by no means refused to serve; he applied himself to cultivating, with consummate art, a taste and a manner that were specific attributes of his time. "The future is built today," he says. "And it is not built in isolation, but rather in community and in harmony." (English voiceover by Bruno Giussani. • Cimarosa: 21 Sonatas
    April 2, 2021

Composer: Domenico Cimarosa Artists: Andrea Chezzi (organ) Online purchase or streaming (Spotify, iTunes, Amazon Music, Deezer, Google Play): https://brilliant-classics.lnk.to/Cimarosa21OrganID More Information: https://www.brilliantclassics.com/articles/c/cimarosa-21-organ-sonatas/ Brilliant Classics has already published all 88 of Domenico Cimarosa’s keyboard sonatas in their commonly encountered appearance as harpsichord pieces (BC95027), as well as an album of 30 sonatas in arrangements for guitar (BC94172). He may still be better known as a composer of comic opera, for masterpiece such as Il matrimonio segreto, but this new album of the sonatas in versions for organ celebrates the variety and adaptability of Cimarosa’s idiom and demonstrates why he was so lionized in his own time. The painter Delacroix preferred Cimarosa’s music to Mozart’s. Stendhal wrote that he would rather be hanged than be forced to state which of the two he preferred. Even the notoriously partial Viennese critic Eduard Hanslick lavished praise on Cimarosa’s wonderful facility, inventive compositional strokes and refined taste, and Goethe, no less, directed several productions of his operas.
